Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone here wear a summer-weight balaclava?

I just found out what a balaclava was after reading it in the commuting forum. A commuter there wears a summer balaclava. So it's kind of like a silk ski-mask to protect against sun rays.

Does anyone else here wear one? I've never heard of it before.

+1. wtf? thats exactly what I thought when i read the subject. if you want to get technical, sun's rays will come through sheer fabrics anyway- so, protection-wise you still need the 'screen.

Light knit fabric with different patterns per construction and moisture wicking properties to enhance breathability. This fabric has a UPF/SPF 50
Right.... It's black. If it's white, sure, might work. Look at all those holes, how the hell is that SPF50?

Oh.. I see now, it has sunscreen "in" it?! Well, voids my previous comment, but I still think it's stupid.

A lot of fabrics are rated SPF. I think it only refers to the ability of the fabric to block sun rays, just like it does for sunscreen. For example, in southern countries (e.g. Australia), it is common to wear thin fabric swimming shirts which have an SPF rating.

As for the summer balaclava, I cant imagine why they'd make it black. I wear a very think balaclava if it's 45 degrees or colder, but it isn't for UV. FOr that I wear sunscreen and/ or a do-rag.

The only reason I would consider that—and believe me, I have—is because I'm sick of inhaling gnats.

I prefer a Keffiyeh (Shamagh) over a Balaclava. Oh, wait, wrong forum.

Being raised in California a block from the beach, I can attest that years of using Coppertone SPF 4 and even Hawaiian Tropic tanning OIL (almost negative protection), my body is none the worse for wear.

Sunscreen saves me laundry, too. It's easy being green.

Wow, you did not know what that was? Are you from the warm part of the USA? I'm being serious and not an ass, I want to know if only us people of the land of ice and snow are familiar with that item. Do you know what a block heater is and where it's used?

I can't imagine wearing that on a 90 degree day, i've contemplated white bandanas (as opposed to the sweat band I've been using) but I don't see the need to have my face covered nor does it seem comfortable. Though I guess it could come in handy for drive bys or scaring emo kids on fixies.

it's a plug-in for your car to keep the engine *somewhat* warmer during especially cold weather.

I rode with this rather stange looking guy a couple years ago that work white tights, a whitle long sleeve base layer, and a sombrero looking hat under his helmet to block the sun. He must have had some serious issues with skin cancer.

I take my summer weight balaclava backpacking in the summer. I use it sometimes riding my bike in when winter gets cold here in SoCal...35-40 degrees or so.
