Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ostrich, nope, Emu yep, one got loose from the fenced field where it was kept, and had an attitude towards all humans. Cyclist were included in that particular large flightless bird's distastes.

You'd be grumpy too, if you were born as a bird, but couldn't fly.

If only Phil and Paul were doing the commentary..."That's really put the cat amongst the ostrich".

So what you're saying is that an ostrich would not be able to keep up with and out sprint the vast majority of those who post on this forum.

I was going to bring my GoPro and am sorry I didn't.
Horses and cyclists do not mix. Horses can be really freaked out by cyclists. A few years back at the Almanzo 100 the presence of the cyclists caused some horses to break free and run. One of the horses was injured and had to be put down.

I had a co-worker a couple decades ago who had an ostrich farm. He said they were very very mean and you could not turn your back on them. He brought me an egg and that thing was huge. Was tough to crack (ended up using a hammer) and it was equivalent to about a dozen chicken eggs.

It looked like they had a slight downhill. If so, that is that saved them. Man, that bird was fast! If it was uphill, that bird would have knocked at least one down.

Had they been wearing a black kit, and drinking a good brand of cocoa, this bird would have had no shot.

I wonder what they do if they catch you. Dogs are pretty exciting if you ride recumbent trikes because the teeth come in at eyeball level and your position is suboptimal from a self defense point of view.

For those who like to be involved in weird chases, sea kayaking is the sport for you.

Ostrich have very sharp toe nails and use them to fight. They jump and claw ripping out ones intestines. They are regarded as highly dangerous by those in the know. Emu's can do the same but are not known to be as aggressive as Ostrich. The meat from both species is quite tasty!

Are you sure you heard "Peter Sagan", or "Peter Sagal"(the host of the show)?

Never did ride an ostrich when I was in Oudtshoorn. The baboons on the roads in South Africa were scary. They moved for cars, but they could not be bother for cyclists.

Oh, it was Sagan all right. They went into the "controversy" about him racing with hairy legs in a few spring classics.

I lived in Amanzimtoti (close to Durban on the east coast) .... Baboons are a menace, they break into homes and wreck the places,. They even attack and steal food from children. They are fearless and even attack large dogs
