Hi all,

Bought a Peugeot racer, not sure on the model but around '86, and I love it. However, it only has 4 gears and I am thinking of upgrading it to at least 7, and then implement a triple chainring to make it 21 gears. However, I've a strong feeling, just by eyeing up the rear cassette, that a 7 speed cassette won't fit. Is there anyway I can maybe widen the frame or something? Thanks

Freewheel? hub french threaded? they are a Cul de Sac, standards thread and tube diameters left behind by now,

your plan can be accomplished.. But it wont be low cost. quite the opposite.

yes people widen steel frames .. See: "cold setting" on Sheldon brown's site.

It sounds that is is an old bike if it has 4 speeds, like 50's which along with it being french would complicated upgrades. it would best to post a picture and you might want to take this to C&V forum (but be prepared for some push back on modernizing a truly old bike)

Thanks for the reply. It is British threaded BB. Popped into the bike shop earlier and a new looking lad said that i shouldnt bother. Not too sure what to do as i will most likely brake it if i cold set it myself. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I cant date it specifically but its around mid 80s as it has an english BB

Okay, there's been some monkey business going on. A Peugeot racing bike of that era would have come with two chainwheels and a 6 speed freewheel. Most likely a Maillard helicomatic.

It also would have brazed on shifter bosses.

4-speed freewheels haven't been made for probably 50 years. Your bike is much older than you think. Your BB may be a Swiss style.

Id put an Internally geared hub rear wheel in , if I were you.. (its all I use, any more)

Will do. Im not 100% sure its 4 speed but thats what it came with. Its a single speed but i feel i may as well just keep it that way for now.

There you go , single speed is fine as long as you like that gear ratio.

First you said it was a 4 speed, then you say that you don't know how many speeds, now you say it's a single speed. Which is it? Until you can get your story straight, I don't think anybody will give you a valid answer, because you don't even know what the question is.

Just post some pics, since you don't know what you have, and save us having to make wild guesses on contradictory information.

Yeah, someone did some sort of single-speed conversion and (I'll bet) just bodged together whatever spacers and a few cogs to get a chainline.

Somebody did sell a four speed derailer, drop handlebar bike in the 1970's. One neighbor had one. Sorry I can't recall anything about it. Was more like a trainer jet, for future multispeed bike owners. In the bike boom era, almost anything on two wheels was selling. Cheers guys
