garmins usually report a bit high due to the location of the temp sensor relative to electronics that generate a bit of heat.

That would explain the 115 degrees my 500 read at a TT last year.

3hrs hours of mid/high "spirited" z2 this morning, with a couple climbs at low VO2, felt fantastic!
Getting stronger is rad.

after freezing yesterday and riding by a tragedy i decided to talk with my manager and change up my work/ride schedule for the winter. i'm now going to be doing most of my riding right before lunch when traffic is low and the sun is shining. did 2h40, new bike old shoes (I'll break in the new shoes in december or something, I need to get back training instead of futzing with gear). one climb at threshold and some sprints on the way home. got a 40s PR on the climb (though fudgy will tell me that's still 80s off where I should be...) at what felt like ~320W and the calculator agrees with me but the PM reported 308W (and I didnt even factor the headwind into account). gonna have to recalibrate the stupid vector (story of my life).
great time of day to ride, really nice to do descents with no cars stressing me out.

New MTB tomorrow. Today I did a pick-up cross race with some buddies, who have multiple state jerseys and at least one national jersey among them. I came in last. I suck so bad at cyclocross skills. But I didn't crash, and I didn't get lapped! And I got some great instruction, too.

. Yeah, I'm not saying there still weren't garbage drivers (e.g. I was in the middle of the very wide bike lane on Sandhill going by the horse park and some idiot drove 2 feet into the lane presumably just to buzz me), just that there were *less* drivers. The worst part of my morning rides are parents dropping their kids off at school - they love to pull into the bike lane/throw open doors to eject their spawn.

noontime riding is definitely more pleasurable that riding in the AM cold and dark.

seems believable, i've also heard that it takes a while to transition from the indoor temperature it was stored at to the outdoor one, which would also imply it was probably cold yesterday

as for cross - ive got a stress fracture in my left tibia right now which makes running difficult. i'm worried once it heals though i'll be tempted back to the track, but right now i'm really enjoying biking because im newish to the sport and its much easier to see gains.

Hour-ish on the trainer tonight after the kids went to bed. Watched the end of the Warriors game, the last few km of Paris Roubaix on youtube, then an assortment of Russian dash cam videos.

Hi!
What is better for riding in the weekend, a one long ride (125 miles) or two 95 miles?

I think this was a reply to me, not scheibo.
This was just a pick-up race, the former national champ guy set up barriers and flags in his yard and the woods. Pretty legit, a 3-4 minute lap with a hill and a run-up and lots of tight turns.
I love riding my cross bike, but I have no real interest in racing cross, because I have no interest in staying race fit all year. It was fun to play around though. These guys are pro level and at that level the race is just full bore from feature to feature. Not quite a sprint, more of a loping kilo type effort, all the time. Like doing 30/30s for a half hour but during the rest intervals you have to get off your bike and run. What's funny is that I've beaten almost every one of them in crits, but I was just buried in the cross race, off the back right away and struggling to keep them from lapping me. Just a totally different skill set.

2x95 miles. That's still like 5+hrs/day at training pace. You're talking like 11-12hrs of training vs 7-8hrs. This assumes you're physically capable of doing that volume without falling apart.

Thank you!
Yes, I am capable of doing it. I currently do 22-25hr a week. However, I need to pick that up soon since I'm planning to do L-B-L challenge in April.

Just for fun I played with some of the power numbers from the 30 minute play race. AP=196, NP=203. Sounds boring! Also sounds totally steady state, which is exactly the opposite of reality.
NP is calculated off a 30 second rolling average, under the theory that very short efforts with rest in between as not as taxing as longer efforts of similar average power. For example, if you do a 1000w 5 second effort and then coast for 25 seconds, and do that for an hour (or any amount of time), your NP for the whole ride will only be 167w. If you narrow the calculation window to 5 seconds, NP is over 500w. Who knows what the "right" number is, but obviously doing that for an hour would be harder than just rolling at 167w. NP is designed to be a simple model and this is a contrived case that it just doesn't capture.
Anyway, using a 5 second window, NP for the pick-up race NP goes up to 300w, which is a lot more like how it felt.

25 hours a week? Yikes.
