Not much pain if I hold still. Just saw the orthopedic surgeon, he says it does not need surgery as of yet, but sometimes the bones can move so I'll be visiting him again for more xrays on Friday.

It's in the random thought thread... things can get lost in there haha. Basically, I went to Saturday morning session at hellyer on worn out cleats with my new cleats still in the package at home. Bad idea.

Same ones. 8000 miles. They look they were chewed up in a lawnmower.

Now that's how I look.

Ugh. I had a less severe lesson in cleat maintenance. Best wishes on the recovery.

My spd-sl cleats never really look that bad even after decent mileage. I replace them every time I get fit which is about every 2 years or 12,000 miles.

Couple of points on cleats at the track. I keep the tension set at maximum so it is hard to cleat in and very hard to cleat out. My wife has to jump on her pedals to cleat in. You should hear a definitive sound of engagement. This is the opposite of what crit racers want which is an easy sure engagement since missing a cleat in at the start is bad. At the track for mass start races, you line up on the rail and have plenty of time to cleat in. There is a neutral roll out and then racing starts. Similarly, for a standing start, one has plenty of time to cleat in. I like the SPD SL red cleats - no float, tight as possible.

Worn cleats are obviously bad but loose new cleats can be also bad. Many times racers try to steer with their feet or add motion trying to sprint harder and twist out of the pedals. Last Thursday, a racer at Hellyer pulled out of both pedals sprinting but did not crash. The cleats were fine.

Many pure sprinters use cleats and straps to make sure that they cannot twist out of the pedal and some pedals have a pin that you push to lock the shoe cleat onto the pedal after engagement.

Driveway 3/4 - 17/71. I was on the winning wheel for the final sprint but couldn't match his move from where he launched...even while setting a new CP curve for 1"-55". I am not a sprinter.

Driveway P123 - 35' then quit. Combination of only couple hrs sleep plus long and stressful work week limited my ability to focus so I decided to roll off before I did anything too stupid. I had already mad a couple dumb moves, one of which involved a pretty hard wheel touch. The bumping/wheel touching drills with @waterrockets last week paid off in keeping myself and others around me upright.

I'm glad the bumps helped out. You were moving me around just fine given the size difference.

That 3/4 race can be tough to turn into something other than a sprint.

Red Kite ITT/Hillclimb

8.4mi, ~1400ft of climbing, hellacious 20+ mph headwinds channeled down the pass.

p12 - 1st of 5, won by 45s
23 - 1st of 3, won by 3+min

Overall: 3rd and 7th fastest runs of the day. Phipps was -20s and This climbing phenom Stefano Profumo put the best time of the day, getting me by 40s overall. We were equal at the 5mi mark but when the grade went up, so did the timegap.

Not sure if you're being snarky, but Phipps was in masters and Profumo is a 3 and raced only 3/4s. I.E. they raced when the wind died down.

and then it came back up for my 2nd race.

and because you all hate the strava, here's the race shape of the top 3 times. I had phipps into the final mile, but those last kickers are like 15% and my ass is too meaty.

Nope, only the top three get their photo taken. Stupid move letting the break go, but sometimes **** happens. I did manage to go from boxed in 15 back to 1st in the sprint. #fatmanpower
