I decided to drive the family to my daughter's soccer game tomorrow in San Clemente (51 miles from home) with my bike in the back, and I'll ride home while they enjoy a nice air conditioned ride in the luxo-barge. They'll probably stop for a nice lunch on the way home, I'll get a Clif bar.

I could have ridden up the beach and kept it nice and flat but something's gotten into me this month. Maybe it's Beanz with his incessant optimism about climbs, maybe it's Seattle Forrest with his 5k challenge, maybe its those guys in WVA that get 10k of climbing in per 10 miles... but I mapped out a dastardly route home that will net me an additional 5,700 feet of climbing in 70 miles, if RidewithGPS is to be believed. It'll probably be less than that.

This is uncharted territory! It's no century, but I've never ridden 80% of these roads before (unsupported! No SAG!) but I can't tell you how excited I am to hit the tarmac tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Meh! Do Breathless Agony next May, 12,000 ft in 72 miles. or Big Bear, app 9500 in 62 miles.

5700 in 70 miles, you might as well take the luxo-barge back, it's about the same workout.

+1 pack heavy in case food/water is scarce on the road or conditions turn foul/you have a headwind the entire way etc. . . . . Family unit may have trouble finding you on the uncharted roads.

You'll make it, we all have faith.
Use the pulldown in the upper right of ridewithgps to look at the USGS topo bit and you'll see all the 20' gradient lines real close together. This means, as Gold would put it "ack!"
There's a nasty bit (16%) at about 46 miles in the Peralta hills. Be prepared for that.

I had to stop and lay down in the shade for almost 15 min at the 4:30 mark or so, I just got too hot. I've ridden longer, but probably not this hard.

To those of you looking to cash in on my bike stuff - sure, just call my wife and tell her I said you could have it all.

Somehow I missed this thread yesterday and saw your ride on Strava and wondered why you started a ride so far from home. Way to go! Seriously awesome job.

I would have preferred riding TO the soccer game... but since it started at 10 am I would have had to leave the house at 5 am and I'm not so keen on that.

I took a couple pictures on the way, i'll have to post a ride report tomorrow if my freaking family lets me do what *I* want to do on Father's day. Not likely.
