Shogun Metro AT winter/rain bike

Hi everybody, I'm about three or four builds behind in showing off here lol, but I have been having a blast riding this early 90s Shogun Metro AT hybrid I converted to drop bars. It was stripped down to the frame and crankset at the co-op, and had been getting tossed around from corner to corner when I decided it needed to be rescued. It has that awesome early hybrid geometry that's closer to touring bikes than anything else. Totally cobbled together, it has matrix aurora rims, 25mm 4000GPs (although I'm testing out some 700x38 Schwinn/Innova tires I got for $5 each on clearance last week at Target. Nice riding but waaaay too heavy, I think the Contis are going back on), 2x8 Sora with a converted Sugino triple in the front to a 48x34 double. That's paired with an Exage Country rear derailleur, and (I think) a Sora double front derailleur (braze-on, with a 28.6 clamp) It all shifts really, really nice, way better than I expected. Brakes are off an old Univega hybrid I had previously stripped for parts for another build. Had to source a new 26.6 seatpost, and the saddle is a place holder from my Fuji Sportif that has been put on several bikes. The handlebar tape is Cinelli "denim," but it's really just a shade of dark blue. I had to Dremel a little bit of the Sakae stem to get the drop bars in there; ended up working out nicely. These old bones need that rise I guess. All together it really rides nice. Old steel and all that. But seems a bit more lively than I expected--maybe it's the relatively light wheelset. Just really wants you to hop on and go. Currently testing out fender options, and I would like to stick a rack on the back.

any issues with non ramped/pinned rings and the front indexing? are they sugino rings you're using?

Thanks--yeah, at one point I had a sweet Ritchey quill stem mocked up but it was too long and I loved the matching color.

No issues whatsoever with the rings. The 48t outer is a Sugino ring; the 34t is an older Shimano from my bins, but it's not really ramped either. If I was to really analyze it, I'd say maybe it's a little more of a direct shove, but it's by no means really noticeable, and it's definitely not rough or inconsistent. Haven't missed a shift yet. What I'm noticing more than that is the fact that the crankset has 165mm arms; every other bike I have has 175mm cranks. It's not bad; it's just different.

Ha! Small world! That rack/bag setup is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Do you remember what brand pannier that is?

Inside is stiffened with hardboard.

I made them a couple of German combat packs and some hooks from the hardware store, a bungee cord, and a drawer handle! 😂😂

If you'd like more detail on what did, I'd be happy to go into the process. These were my test models, I have another set of the bags to use with better hardware.
Swiss army bread bags make sweet panniers too, sold cheap when I was in highschool, but go for like 50 bucks now!
