Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That means you’ll soon be getting a new helmet, or a couple pair of tires and some bar tape or munchies.

One thing I could use is a gadget that warns me when a vehicle with dog is approaching. It always seems to get me when I'm pedaling along and suddenly hear a bark at close range.

Caution, hand-wringing content below:

During my ride yesterday I was not terribly fond of my drivetrain.

Lots of chain / jockey wheel noise from the RD, and I haven't used a friction shifter in a few months so I'm a bit out of practice. Overall, though, things need to change.

I've got a 10 speed compatible cassette hub on there so I'm looking into that option a little bit, but it appears that the only indexed 10 speed downtube shifters out there are Mircoshift and 7900 series Dura-Ace. The former are hideous and the latter are scarcely available, I can only find a few NOS sets on eBay for $100+. That would turn into a pretty expensive project as I would need shifters, rear derailleur, cassette, and chain.

Totally refreshing the drivetrain is the overall plan and will involve all of those parts, but when the shifters alone start out in triple digits it makes it a bit harder to swallow.

I've used the widely available and cheap 8 speed Sora downtube shifters before and liked them, but I really would like to go to 10 speed mostly for the closer ratios available, especially with a standard 12-28 cassette. In order to get spacing closer to 10 speed with an 8 speed cluster, I would need to either build a custom cassette or run something like a 12-23. But then I would need to drop my small chainring down to a 26 to keep the overall range in line with what I need, and I'm not sure how a 20T chainring jump would work.

It appears that no indexed 9 speed downtube shifters exist aside from Microshift, so that's out. And I don't really want to go the barcon-to-downtube conversion thing. I think bar end shifters look weird on the downtube.

Staying with 8 speed would probably be okay, but I have a feeling that might cause me to do something really weird like throwing a third ring on my crank to create a half-step plus granny setup to get those closer ratios.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Consider a Tiagra 4700 drivetrain? I see you can get a full groupset (including crankset and brakes) for $300-ish, so I imagine just RD/FD/Shifters could be had for even less?

That is probably what I will go with if I end up putting STI levers back on this bike. Brand new, a shifter set is about $175 so it looks like it could be done for $225ish with RD, cassette, and chain. Even at this point, the NOS Dura-Ace 7900 stuff on eBay would be cheaper.

I do want to keep the downtube shifters for a while, hence the hand-wringing. They're especially handy in the winter, I can wear cheap bulky gloves and still shift easily.

My greatest disappointment in this whole research project was discovering that my all-time favorite RD aesthetically, the Dura-Ace 7402, has a weird cable pull and only works with 7400 series shifters

Lots of options and trade-offs. I still run 6 speed DT indexed shifting on my steel bike, it's got a full Dura-Ace 7400 groupset. But honestly, this old bike is 99% on the trainer these days. The 21st century has its benefits. You may want to embrace the modern. Alternatively, go to C&V for old tyme options/suggestions.

I have been debating the jump to 11 speed, but convinced myself that the 10 speed has been chugging along and I should potentially look at a different bike rather than put more money into the current rig (rim vs disc brake). Then I went on a ride and dropped the chain shifting to the big ring like 3 miles in. Never happened on that bike before. I still think I could spend smarter money elsewhere.

Not saying it might have helped with your specific situation, but it saves you from looking during those critical moments and basically allows you to avoid the stupid cager by either slowing down, moving away, or my choice, waving them past when I can see the oncoming lane would allow them to.

neither does the camera unfortunately. It only records the unpleasant moment for post actions, not that I don’t see the value of it. I’d just prefer to be aware so I can try and avoid rather than get hit and sue.

I was gone all day (breakfast with geezers, washed the car, and then a 32 mile ride) and came back to find that Addiction had morphed in to the A&S forum.

Half the ladies I know wear the orange Mojito, because it looks awesome with the kits.
