One thing I could use is a gadget that warns me when a vehicle with dog is approaching. It always seems to get me when I'm pedaling along and suddenly hear a bark at close range.

During my ride yesterday I was not terribly fond of my drivetrain.
Lots of chain / jockey wheel noise from the RD, and I haven't used a friction shifter in a few months so I'm a bit out of practice. Overall, though, things need to change.
I've got a 10 speed compatible cassette hub on there so I'm looking into that option a little bit, but it appears that the only indexed 10 speed downtube shifters out there are Mircoshift and 7900 series Dura-Ace. The former are hideous and the latter are scarcely available, I can only find a few NOS sets on eBay for $100+. That would turn into a pretty expensive project as I would need shifters, rear derailleur, cassette, and chain.
Totally refreshing the drivetrain is the overall plan and will involve all of those parts, but when the shifters alone start out in triple digits it makes it a bit harder to swallow.
I've used the widely available and cheap 8 speed Sora downtube shifters before and liked them, but I really would like to go to 10 speed mostly for the closer ratios available, especially with a standard 12-28 cassette. In order to get spacing closer to 10 speed with an 8 speed cluster, I would need to either build a custom cassette or run something like a 12-23. But then I would need to drop my small chainring down to a 26 to keep the overall range in line with what I need, and I'm not sure how a 20T chainring jump would work.
It appears that no indexed 9 speed downtube shifters exist aside from Microshift, so that's out. And I don't really want to go the barcon-to-downtube conversion thing. I think bar end shifters look weird on the downtube.

My greatest disappointment in this whole research project was discovering that my all-time favorite RD aesthetically, the Dura-Ace 7402, has a weird cable pull and only works with 7400 series shifters

That is probably what I will go with if I end up putting STI levers back on this bike. Brand new, a shifter set is about $175 so it looks like it could be done for $225ish with RD, cassette, and chain. Even at this point, the NOS Dura-Ace 7900 stuff on eBay would be cheaper.
I do want to keep the downtube shifters for a while, hence the hand-wringing. They're especially handy in the winter, I can wear cheap bulky gloves and still shift easily.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
I have been debating the jump to 11 speed, but convinced myself that the 10 speed has been chugging along and I should potentially look at a different bike rather than put more money into the current rig (rim vs disc brake). Then I went on a ride and dropped the chain shifting to the big ring like 3 miles in. Never happened on that bike before. I still think I could spend smarter money elsewhere.

Again, and not to be argumentative, I'm having trouble picturing how more advance warning that there's a motor vehicle behind me is going to help. I have the same issue with mirrors.
Unless I'm dodging rocks and potholes, I am comfortable looking over either shoulder and I haven't even found that to be useful in a passing situation other than to make the driver aware that I know (s)he's there.

neither does the camera unfortunately. It only records the unpleasant moment for post actions, not that I don’t see the value of it. I’d just prefer to be aware so I can try and avoid rather than get hit and sue.
