The Miyata 1000LT came about as the Expedition was ending.
I would probably take an Expedition over a regular Miyata 1000 of the same or similar age, but I'd take a Miyata 1000LT over an older Expedition.
The later frame will generally have more braze ons and be more modern-y as well as Miyata's Splined Triple Butted tubing.

Wasn't there a connection between the Expedition and Miyata? Did Miyata make some of the earlier Expeditions?

I have owned a 1982 Miyata 1000 (63cm), which I sold a year or so ago. I recently picked up a 1983 Specialized Expedition (63.5cm) frameset with some parts on it, and built it up (to test ride to see how I liked it).
The 1000 had a single bottle cage braze-on and downtube shifter braze-ons. The Expedition has three sets of bottle cage braze-ons as well as ones for a low-rider/mid-fork mounted rack. Braze-on for braze-on, the Expedition is much better outfitted. A 1000 LT, which is the exact same thing as a 1000 aside from the extra "LT" letters, is a 1987 or newer. A bit of an unfair comparison to the Expedition, which was made from 1983-1985 initially. While everybody else was mucking about with shorter chain stays and a single bottle cage boss set, the Expedition, in 1983, along with the first Cannondale ST (and '83's Schwinn Voyageur SP) rocked a full suite of touring-specific accommodations (bottle bosses, mid-fork rack mounts, long chain stays, etc). The Expedition went one further and had its canti brakes built around a 700C wheel instead of the traditional 27" wheel everyone else spec'd.
The 1000 I had, had a regal ride quality that I really appreciated. The Expedition is simply sublime. Very comfortable, but also very very fast (unloaded). Effortless and airy once underway. It shares the Cannondale ST's propensity toward outright pace (if you so desire). It makes its case for being the only bike in your fleet, it's that good.
You can't lose with either, please know that. I don't have experience with 1000 LT's, though they will have very similar specs to a four-years-older Expedition. I'll take the Expedition's mature dark grey metallic paint and designed-for-700C wheels architecture. Mine is just back from a BF member's shop where it got its fork's canti bosses replaced with one's more properly spaced for optimum (Tektro CR720) canti operation. The paint is far from perfect, so it's getting powder coated and re-decaled. I can't wait!

I really like the Miyata but thought the triple butted tubing a little flexible for fully loaded touring especially in the larger sizes. I'd take the Expedition but it depends on the use. You certainly couldn't go wrong with either. My vote, get them both.😁
