Why is this cross-check so cheap?

For my commute/errands I'm thinking of getting a stock complete Cross Check and slowly buying the components that i really like to replace them later (would love to build one up but i'm going cross-eyed (sorry) trying to learn everything i'd need to know to get that done, plus the $$$). Heck, maybe i'll grow to love the bar-end shifters.

That seems to make sense if i can find a cheap enough complete. This place is selling them for crazy cheap - https://edinabike.com/page.cfm?PageID...and=405&type=T
Everywhere else i've looked has been a lot more expensive - is this a great deal or am i missing something here? Did i miss an unwritten rule that says i will have to surrender a kidney if i buy here?

Thanks for any input! Great forum. There's an intimidating amount of bike info out there and i don't want to spend my money stupidly.

damn, thats a good price for a cross check complete. There is a local lbs near me that will sell it for 785.
most places have it for 900. I guess the surly's are cheap, but for me its still a good chunk of change. Everything is relative i suppose.

I don't know why it's so cheap, but I've been looking to buy a Surly Cross-check frameset online for the past couple weeks and the next closest price I've found is $335USD from smartbikeparts.com. You've found a great deal, thanks for sharing. The customer service at smartbikeparts.com is excellent, I don't know about Edina. Good luck with your purchase if you make one.
If you do buy, please post about their customer service and your bike.

thats only 300 more than i paid for my frame alone.

who cares if it is a year old... so long as they weren't riding it for that year it's a good deal!

The frame isn't the best steel in the world, but it's a pretty good deal.

Looks to be a very sweet deal. But at that site, I find no description of how the bike is set-up??

Seems about right for a discount on an 05 model when the 07s are coming out. They probably ordered too many. Just confirm the componenets. It's got me thinking about getting one.

I suspect the difference is in the component spec. Make sure the wheelset is solid and the drivetrain isn't poo before you pull out your wallet.

I'm a little leery of the fact that no where on the site does it mention the component specs.
If I were you, I'd give them a call and find out what the ride is spec'd out with before dropping the cash.

Is this the Cross Check Complete, or is it a build-up from this bike shop? I don't see a component list. I'd call to make sure the components are the same as the Complete before buying.

It looks like they're just being a middleman between QBP and the rest of us. Very little markup over what they're paying but trying to make up for it in volume. If you look around all their prices are low. Take a look at Harris cyclerys special order QBP page and the items probably match but prices don't. I remember a couple of years ago AEbikes had Steamrollers for like $285 new. I think Surly/QBP put an end to that because of undercutting everyone else. These guys have them for $303. I'd say go for it but call first to make sure they're a real shop.

fwiw, yellowbook.com and yellowpages.com both show it as a legit business. I emailed them asking for a spec list, if I hear back I'll post it here.

My LBS wanted $1400 for a Cross-Check complete. Are they out of whack, are these prices absurdly low, or both?

they must be insane. A Fuji Cross Pro with Ultegra costs about that much and has a much much better frame.

I was quoted $1400 for the Cross Check with 105 gearing and various other upgrades.

makes sense then.

I got an email back from the guy:

Frankly, I did not realize that Surly had a complete bike package in the catalog and therefore on our site. I checked the specifications with the supplier and they match those detailed on the Surly site. https://www.surlybikes.com/bikes.html

Honestly, I am not sure if we can sell the complete bike without full assembly

I also checked the web site and it is a killer deal that borders on a mistake. So if you want it, book it quick because my web guy is reviewing the all the bike frame and complete bike listings.

I think it's legit, and I really wanted to buy one until I checked my bank account

They seem to have great customer service too fwiw.

Price is now $855.60. I ordered one at $702 (+ only $14.99 shipping!). I figured if they contacted me and said it was a misprint, I would just ask for a cancellation. They confirmed and said it was in stock and would ship Tuesday (09/05) due to the holiday, total was $716.99. Did anyone else order?

They didn't even ask for a kidney.

LBS would order for $995 -- found elsewhere on internet for $850, then I saw this thread and ordered immediately. Price was $702 + 25.99 for second day shipping for a total of $727.99. Some hours after I got the confirmation email, I got an email from the owner that I assumed would be to cancel the order. But he (cg) just said that he had it in stock, but due to size+weight would ship UPS ground on Tuesday because of the holiday. I can't wait.

This is a bike shop to add to the list of great ones! They honored a misprint on their site with no qualms, even alerting prospective buyers to act quickly if they wanted the misprint price before they changed it. Execellent.

That certainly is the mark of a great business. I ordered one myself and figured I receive stating the price was a mistake and they wouldn't honor my order, but instead the email thanked me for my business and said the bike would be shipped today. Companies like this are rare.

Thanks for the initial post, acapybara!
