Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Of course, don't you listen when drivers buzz you - cyclists don't pay any taxes for infrastructure.

I can deal with a rough road surface okay, it's the damn expansion cracks that produce a large jarring shock through the handlebars every 15 feet or so. There's one road in particular that has them for a good mile straight.
Around here, it's two things. First is that a lot of the roads need maintenance. Broken asphalt surface is bad enough, but then there are the places where a part has come up and you have a pothole. Second is that when they DO resurface the road, it's often rougher than it was before. The surface reminds me of that 'textured' plaster they used to do on top of sheet rock back in the 70s and 80s. It causes constant buzz through the tires, frame and bars, and you find yourself desperately seeking the smoothest line. Over a few years, it all smooths out as tires sweep over it.

Then they resurface again.

I'd base a toll on rider poundage just to get those fatties back on the couch.

But they have lower pressure contact points, so they probably subject the surface to less and tear.

By the looks of things, general deterioration of infrastructure is in the future. With four more years, Mexico could give the US a run for the money in that department. Our traffic load is a tiny proportion if yours.

And, for all of you who are wondering, I've gotten the ball rolling toward registering to vote. First time in 30 years.

Good luck with that.
Ever notice how a family, no matter how small, can fan out and obstruct an entire MUP?

I'm also seeing this with families on bicycles on the roads, which is a bit more frightening given, you know, CARS.

Costco is *made* for wide.... shopping carts... yet I still spend half of my time there waiting for people to get out of the way.

If a road is getting resurfaced around here it's typically blacktop. One of my regular routes has a couple of miles that were recently resurfaced and it's smooth as silk
