What size is this?

These are the specs on my bike (2012 Surly Disc Trucker). The specs on the stem says “26.0 mm bar clamp” I would like to know the steerer tube clamp size of this stem. Does anyone know?

28.6mm/1 1/8" steerer clamp for the stem. The Headset size listed gives you the answer.

Sorry but I’m not seeing where you’re getting 28.6 from. Appreciate the help.

28.6mm is 1 1/8". The latter dimension is listed under headset.

You have an 11/8" headset. You have a treadless stem that size...your bar size is 26.0

Thanks everybody. I wanted to change the bars on this bike to a bar with some flare, like the

Service Course SL 70 XPLR Handlebar

It seems there’s not a lot of choice in 26mm handlebars, the Zipp bars above like most are 31.8mm. So, I’m thinking now I’ll swap out the stock stem to something with 31.8 clamp size to give me more options in bars. Am I right?

+1

The headset spec tells you the fork size, which tells you the stem size.

Yes, all you need to change from a 26.0 handlebar to a 31.8 handlebar is get a new stem. That's pretty much the standard drop bar dimension nowadays, it's unusual to see 26.0 any more. Although I do have a couple of bikes with them for various reasons.

The steer tube size listed for the bike 1-1/8" is also very much standard these days, so you won't have any problem finding an appropriate stem (1-1/8" steer tube clamp / 31.8mm handlebar clamp) at whatever price point suits you - cheap or expensive.

There are 2 sides to a stem.

One side fastens to the fork tube with all the spacers and stuff. This is a 1-1/8" standard and even many BSO's use this.

Thus the other side of the stem fastens to the handlebar. If you are getting a new bar, that will be 31.8mm.

If you want to keep the old stem and keep to 26mm, your options are limited, perhaps 25.4mm bars with spacers to add.

Correct. 26mm was the old road standard, but you'll likely only find vintage style or inexpensive bars in this size. So a very common 1 1/8" and 31.8mm stem is the right choice - and there are plenty to choose from.

Keep in mind that different bars have different reaches, so you may want to go to a different length stem than whatever you currently have to best suit the new bar.

Thanks, maddog.
Gee, I remember when it was 25.399 or some such. But the really hard change was when we gave up on cubits....
