That article strikes me as a lot of whining about a service that he's free to walk away from.

Yeh that's what's so great about it!

Messing with the API access is one sure way to bring development to a dead stop. Which means that Strava has that as the deliberate objective. They either want to funnel access to their services through their own website or monetize mobile access (and other clever aps).

It could be a mistake. Strava has a lot of data which is their big asset but functionally Strava isn't all that technically difficult. On the other hand if Strava has enough network effect edge from "first mover" status then they'll come out looking pretty smart.

Well Strava can do whatever they want. People don't have to use it. It's THEIR data once you put it on their servers. I'll admit to being mildly annoyed though, because there are some other sites doing really interesting stuff with Strava's data.

I was surprised Strava was providing any API at all. What's in it for them?

STAVA clearly stated that they don't have the resources to have a full time API team so they decided to throttle back access until they could.

This is a 'victim of their own success' story; They've had too much growth too quickly and the can't manage it with their current resources.

They have provided API details to some 3rd party app providers, e.g. Raceshape. They say later this year they'll open it up to a broader group. It doesn't sound like a big deal to me.
