Surly Straggler

The Straggler looks like a worthy commuting steed. I am thinking about ordering a frameset and having wheels built around the Shimano Alfine 11 hubs, rack, and panniers. Anyone have a built up Straggler yet?

Look's like a great frame, no not on that frame, but did build a KM, with a Alfine 11, way to expensive to commute around with. Better have security detail with when you lock it about.

I've had that frame on my wish list too! I'd love to hear what choices you end up making and how the build turns out. I was imagining it with moustachhe handlebars and the Alfine 11.

That could be the ultimate commuter.

Although, I am financially limited to a Fyxation Quiver with a SA 3sp.

I was thinking of using one to build up a new commuter for my son. I would opt for the Nuvinci N360 just because I had a bad experience with Shimano and their 8sp IGH. I have been using a Nuvinci for years without a single problem, it's also less expensive.

The Quiver looks like a cool bike. Was the frame actually made in Wisconsin for that price.

It's a disc Cross Check.. to use an alfine 11speed IGH

[General Overview] you should look for sliding dropouts.

so as you tighten the chain the disc caliper moves with the wheel. (My Rohloff Koga uses that)

Or an eccentric BB, there you tighten the chain by moving the crank forward ..

Other than that you will need a chain tensioner .. ( My Rohloff Bike friday uses R'offs)

it's like a rear derailleur with out the cable attached, to push it in (and out).

then vertical Rear dropouts will be OK.

the Straggler uses a little horizontal motion and has oval disc caliper mounts and a derailleur hanger..

Google found picture: Surly Straggler Frameset in Tree Fort Bikes Cyclocross (cat928)

so a Chain-tensioner will be useful .. unless you can get the chain length just right (consider Half links)

The Straggler is basically the Cross Check with disc brakes. Some people love 'em or hate 'em. Its an individual choice.

Not really. Check out the geometry, it's quite different in BB drop and TT length. Plus there are issues mounting racks on it.

There's some good Straggler threads on the mtbr.com/surly forum. No issues with IGH/SS, lots of them running without a tensioner.

I love that purple. Looks like an extremely fun bike.

I didn't love my Cross Check, but that's probably because I didn't outfit it well. I sold it. But it is a versatile bike, and if you don't mind the weight, it's good for many different uses.

I bought and built up my crosscheck frame about a year before they introduced the Straggler. I don't really wish I had waited a year before starting to bike-commute, but I do wish Surly had been 1 year quicker!
