Baggies, whats the story??
So whats the story with baggies. Ive just got myself a pair (Netti) and am not sure what all the hoo-ha is about.
Ok so the pockets kind of come in handy
Yeah the outside layer can get splashed and kind of keep the inside dry and clean
I guess you get a bit more protection if you go sailing through the scrub
Warmer on a freezing cold day
But i just cant see how there better, theyre less comfortable more restrictive and ride up and down my legs while peddling
Is it just that they look better?
If so that didnt even work, I passed a pretty girl riding in the bush and while she smiled and said hello, she didnt ask for my number or suggest we get married or go dancing next weekend
Maybe she was impressed by the shorts, but then saw the mudguard. Mmmm**********
I wonder?

I think that a lot of guys are afraid that lycra/spandex will make them look gay.

Yeah, you can see why black shorts eliminate the shadows that define men's goods.

Pockets.
And I will say that I have a pair of 35$ shorts and a pair of 50$ shorts (down from like 80 or something at REI) and the more pricey pair are super good and comfortable and the cheap ones are way worse than even riding in jeans are cargo shorts (which I do about 60% of the time).

I tried baggies and they kept getting caught on the seat as I moved forward or back. Ditched them and just accept the fact that lycra looks dumb. But it works!

Well, a few comical replies and a few full of seriously technical bits of aesthetic, moral and ethical suggestions. The fashion tips and the cutting edge of infinite race pace.
To the boys, hah yeah yeah wear what you want, some are better than others, i dont want to see your package either (so i dont look), a bit of brand loyalty, baggies rule, lycra rules.
To the girls, HI, Im the good looking 1 that winks as you are riding towards me and when i smile a "Ting" sound and bright shiny star appears (just like the movies) but alas your too late, married with a pregnant wife, sometimes im in baggies, sometimes in lycra.
Remember me??

Lycra goes with cycling like padding goes with football. It's about function more than looks. Tried the baggies and it works OK but Lycra is a must definitly on road and works pretty dam good in the woods too.

I like the way I feel in Lycra.. not just physically feel, but mentally. I ride to my work and show off my hot bod and such. It's just not the same in cargos.
And I have never worn baggy shorts

I wear Oakly padded riding shorts underneath some baggies, and never have a problem.
My baggies are made out of a very very light microfiber type stuff, and dries in seconds when wet.
comes clean everytime in the was as well.

The big thing we always thought was the durability of baggies, they hold up better in a crash(you also tend to crash more on an MTB).I also think bike companies wanted to try and make it more marketable. That's always a thing people who are thinking about starting riding think of.They get more people taking a longer look at it as a hobby if they know they do'nt have to wear "those things"

Personally I tend to have normal black sports shorts over my lycra shorts, and then whip off the modesty shorts and go full lycra when I'm out of the city or have done a high enough mileage not to care what the hell I look like on the bike.
I have seen baggy shorts with a padded chamois on the inside at the LBS, and was wondering how you would wear them. Surely you wouldn't just put them on your naked body, like normal lycra shorts? Would you wear underwear underneath? But then wouldn't that chafe? Can someone clear up how this garment should be worn?

I wear a pair of those typical form fitted shorts with padding under my everyday cargo shorts. I've never worn anything else in the past two decades. Add a t-shirt, shoes and socks and I'm good to go.

for me
I ride on the road and trail. On the road I ride with Lycra. I love my bibs. I have always ridden with baggy on the trail. I have found lately more sometimes I get caught and they are constricting and restricted movement. I have thought about it wearing Lycra on the trail but I am afraid of crashing or falling into trees. My baggies have done well when caught in muddy and rainy situations.
So I am still riding baggy on the trail and Lycra on the road. I do think that when I can invest in a new set of bibs I will use my old ones for trail and new for road.
