How do you remove the rear suspension from a stumpy?

I need to remove the rear suspension, but not sure how. I'd really like to see how much it weighs.

Why bother? It can't be more than a pound or pound and a half. Look at it this way
how much a fork weighs? About 4 pounds? Well since the rear shock is 1/4 of the size of the fork it should weigh about a pound. Give or take a little.

Fox rear shock weighs 0.4 pounds. If I could shave half a pound that would be nice. Right now my stumpjumper weighs 27 pounds. I'd like it to weigh 23ish. Budget is $1500 + whatever I get from selling the old parts. The only feasible areas where I could probably shave any weight is the drive train or suspension.

So you wanna remove the Brain Fade shock from the Stumpy and put a solid connecting rod in there instead?

Denis...the reason you buy a dually is b/c you ride rocky terrain that warrants it. It seems your bike is the only bike good enough to have a patent on it though...right? All others are failures.

If you remove the shock and put a solid link in there...it will add stress where stress was not meant to be. Those mounts were designed to attach with something that has a bit of compliance...like a shock. You could possibly break something and surely void the warranty.

Stop being such a pansy roadie and suck it up. Heck man...I thought you were some sorta "tough guy" on his Harley boasting about blowing by bikers and making fun of them...consider this a return. Man up, princess. The performance of the rear shock far outweighs the weight savings if removed.

If you've got $1500, you can just go get a decent hardtail... 26 or 29er. Lots of 09s (and even a few 08s) on year end closeouts these days.

You're not going to get to 23# with $1500... either by swapping parts or by buying a new bike. But you'd do better getting a ~25# bike with your $1500 and gradually upgrading parts to shave weight.

I collected crap over time...built myself. It's not a "great" bike, but it is a good bike. I'd prefer more modern geometry. I've been watching for a 2005'ish or newer HT to build with a taller rigid fork like the Instig. or 29'er fork...give it more of a familiar feel like my other Komodo.

okay. you have a budget of 1500 and would like to drop near four pounds. give us a picture of your bike and a link to the specific model. that would help quite a bit, so see what you're working with.

getting to 25 ought not be too bad, but 23 on that budget will be pushing things, at least if you really want it to be durable and trail worthy.

You could shed 4# off of the motor and ride harder.

Not really. I suppose fox doesn't make a rear shock that is compatible with the brain.

Any how I'll just focus on the easy stuff for now: Pedals, seat post, and wheels.

Then maybe I'll just upgrade my whole drive train in a few years.

I wouldn't be surprised if getting lighter wheels cuts 2 pounds off these DT Swiss 470 boat anchors.

I don't want to rain on your parade Denis but I wouldn't count on hitting 23ish with your Stumpy. I've got one (check sig) and it's not that light. I could probably cut some weight but it works the way it is and that's good enough for me.

It's not that light? I have the same year stumpjumper and it only weighs 27 pounds with platform pedals to me that is feather weight.

I guess as a former competitive bodybuilder I will never understand the idea of spending hundreds of dollars to cut a pound or two on a bike. How about going to a gym and lifting a little? that should help you pedal that bike up the hill little bit easier.
I am not saying this to brag but until couple of years ago I used to leg press 1100 lbs for 3 to 4 sets of 10-12 reps, now I hover around 700 lbs so when I hear people trying to shave a pound by ruining a perfectly fine $3k bike it makes me...well you can fill that blank anyway you want.

I don't know. You got the D.T. Swiss Wheels on your bike? I mean these D.T. 470 wheels weigh a ton. This bike will probably lose 2-3 pounds just from going with a lighter cassette and wheels.
