So the LBS called me up...

...and asked me if I wanted any of their old tools.

"Yes" doesn't tell the half of it.

Isn't it great when you go through a pile like this only to find more and more stuff underneath? Suffice it to say that between this and the Raleigh Pro, I've used up my Bike Karma™ for the month. Big time.

Wow- that’s quite a haul, even if I don’t know what half of it does! Is there anything in there that will help you straighten your Grand Prix frame?

Wow. All that stuff new would cost around $3000.

Cleaning compound, shop rags, maybe a very fine file to take off nicks and then a peg board wall and hang them up, to keep them well at hand. Oh, and a half case of the BEST to the LBS.

Unfortunately, there's no HTS-1 here. But I'll find one. It'll probably be tucked away somewhere where prying eyes cannot witness that it hasn't been burned at the stake by the insurance companies.

The best part about it is that most of it is old VAR stuff. I'd take the old VAR bits any day over the new stuff.

Tell me about it. The best bike tools are the ones that they don't hang outside on the rack for you to buy. I'm shocked that there's a headset threader in here. Wonder if I can get an Italian tap too...

Most of them are barely greasy. I have two drawers in mind for most of it.

Folks - I don't want this to wind up in the Sales thread. Let's not discuss Uncle Pennybags in this thread. Thanks.

I'm keeping anything that isn't a duplicate to my own existing tools.

Quite a collection.

Did the shop just give it to you, like hauling out the trash?

Are they upgrading, or did they just decide this was all "vintage" that they don't mess with anymore?

English is all you need, most headsets are 1 X 24tpi.

I've used that stay straightener on more than one old Raleigh and Schwinn.

The SS1 is long gone so that is a great score, I have an HTS-1 and most of the other frame tools, got lucky, they are all barely used and were a pretty good deal. There are a couple of Hts-1's on efbay right now, not cheap, but.......

Simple formula - add up the ages of your store's repair staff, and divide to get an average age. Put any tools older than that age into a box, and offer to the first C&V-obsessed customer who comes to mind.

But yeah +1 above, they probably have little/no remaining use (or know-how) of this generation of tool. So it's a win-win-win; goes to someone who will appreciate them, declutters their shop, and keeps them in use/circulation.

Expensive bikes come in to that shop. The only tools the mechanics seemed to care for out of the pile were the wheel alignment bits.

Pretty much, but the shop owner knows I do lugged steel. I believe he bought it as a lot and it's been sitting mostly unused.

There's a Park crown race cutter here which is newer than when I stopped doing bikes five or six years ago - but a lot of these tools handle the repair and TLC of steel frames. I dare say the only thing that comes in that isn't PF30 or some sort of sealed unit are city bikes.

The owner expressed an interest in one of the Giant Brass 1's I'm flipping as a bike for his son. Can't have a better lead in for the perfect "thank you" than that. Have already offered it to him.

Well, I'd like to add my congrats on a nice haul. AND, I love tools! For what it's worth, as I've spent more time in the C&V arena, I've found that I don't have to do much looking for tasty bits. People have started contacting me instead. 'Just took a call today from someone wanting to know if I was interested in a tubular wheel set.....

I've had one before, and stupidly sold it off along with my cold-setting tools when the bike thing was winding down for me a few years ago.

Where's that headbutting emoji again? Oh yea, here it is.

The Raleigh Pro (and Friends) find from last week happened because I dropped in. "Hey, I've got a Raleigh Professional..." and that was it.

This tool set happened because a recent event put me in contact with the shop again. They transported our bike rodeo bicycles to an event with their shop van. It gave us a chance to touch base on old times...and old tools.

One of my LBS (not this one) charged me $275 for a pair of Suntour bar cons.

...but the bar-cons came with a Raleigh Professional, Romani, Robin Hood, and a Super Grand Prix.
