Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not quite the same circumstance, but I like when the slow guys behind repeatedly yell, “Gap!” in hopes that you’ll close it for them...

People actually do that? Seems like that's just begging to get dropped.

If not yelled at.

I assertively told (kinda yelled at ) a couple of guys that were stopped and blocking the bike lanes of an MUP going up a local canyon yesterday that the needed to clear the lanes when stopped. This was after I whistled at them to let them know I was coming. The fat guy said, "Yeah, we saw you coming." Utterly clueless!!!

Jamie, sorry to report I haven't made it to your book yet. I will. I have very much enjoyed the previous two! Please don't yell at me...

I can only assume that the guys further away from the gap are yelling to those closer to the gap, as opposed to yelling to those on the other side of the gap.

Sure, my local club uses at least half of those. But it's not nearly the same caliber of ride as in the OP.

That would make sense. It can def be annoying when someone in front of you lets a gap open, then you have to decide whether to let it keep opening or pull around them and sprint to catch back up to the group. Altho, at the same time, the person letting the gap open has to know this, right? Not sure how telling them will help motivate them to catch back up lol

Hmmm, not sure if I want to be the first one in the group to try this, since I've never heard anyone do it here.

Really? Every group ride I've been on has at least one guy who yells "Gap!" or "Pedal, dammit!" at the guys on the front. The yeller is always sitting at least 10 back.

It finally happened, I got yelled at in a paceline. I was on a group ride and I was the third wheel in the group. I was being careful not to clip the wheel in front of me. I was on his wheel never more than a couple of feet from his wheel. The lady behind me screamed at me for freewheeling too much. She said I was slowing the rest of the riders behind me. I couldn't of gone much faster speed than I was going, but I didn't realize that not pedaling consistently was causing other riders problem. Lesson learned.

Heh. I think if like you say you between 0 and 3 or 4 feet away from the wheel in front of you the whole time, the lady was just crazy. Ignore her, or better yet act like you're deaf or just turn and make funny faces at her when she comments. Learn how to sign "I'm deaf" and use it when you're stopped

Feather the brakes (breaks), don't stop pedaling. When you stop pedaling, it causes a reaction that will transfer all the way back.

When in the paceline or peloton, you pay for the gift of the draft from the riders in front by giving a smooth, steady, reliable, safe wheel to the rider behind you.

ALWAYS pedal smooth, move smooth. NEVER pump pump coast pump pump coast.

If you do, remember it's yank, yank, yank at a steady pace, not yank, pause, ouch, pause, yank, yank, pause ouch.

Learn the art of soft-pedaling. Basically, you are coasting, but you keep turning the pedals over, just not fast enough to engage the pawls of the freewheel. It looks smoother, but more importantly it is smoother because you just have to increase the rotation a bit rather than starting from zero.
