Eddy Merckx license dummies

Eddy Merckx during his career earned money (actually by the way - never been a priority, also in the times of Eddy Merckx Cycles) mainly racing a bike (that is, overtaking other riders - shockingly regular). But there was another way: selling licenses for the production and sale of bicycles "painted and with Eddy Merckx style stickers" for manufacturers from various countries (preferably exclusively in the country of the producer) - here's a comparison: - Starnord ( France ) - Schauff ( Germany ) - Allegro ( Switzerland ) - Miyata ( Japan ) - Velosport ( Italy ) - Falcon ( Great Britain ) - Kessels ( Belgium ) It does not have to be a complete list, I would like to complete it (please ask for info). Favorite "camo" is definitely Molteni (orange) and C & A (silver). If you want to make sure that your bought for 1000 bucks "original EM" is not gas-pipe "license dummies" see: Decoding of Eddy Merckx frames and my other threads.

Is that anything like how Ted Williams sold his name to Sears to be put on shotguns, footballs, baseballs, bicycles and fishing rods?

I'd say probably. Same with Eddie Bauer, Martha Stewart (first I know to market felony), Dr. Dre, tons of folks. I think Bartali licensed his name for razor blades, or something like that.

This day and age, it's trickled down to self-titled "influencers" on social media, which does not say a lot about the buying public, now that I think of it.

Gee Robbie, I'm really surprised you didn't mention someone named Dave Scott. Regardless, this practice is nothing new, even in the cycling industry. Eddy wasn't the first, by a long shot, and he won't be the last. However, I think Lance has waited too long to market his line of bicycles and has missed the boat. He was too busy launching lawsuits against people who said he did illegal, performance enhancing drugs. It was probably more marketable too, as I don't believe he ever paid any of it back.

I bought his bikes, and they were good.
I bought his book, and it was good.
I bought his jacket, an XL, and I'm too fat for it.
He's dead to me.

But he did write it was not about the bike. So much for bike sales planning, maybe a tie in with Big Pharma would have been a more truthful angle?

Eddy, or his business manager, did a number of branding deals in the 70's. He was looking down the road as he was on bikes with his name on the downtube before there were branded license deals.
When I was young, I thought that was clever planning when I saw the images of Eddy on a Eddy Merckx branded frame for the first time in 1970. Also, smart to get Ugo to help him set up his own facility upon retirement.

I was bummed the Falcon did not really change the geometry on the Eddy branded bikes I was able to measure.

There's nothing new about famous people licensing their name for use by people selling things. Some people make tens, or even hundreds of millions doing it. Of course it only works as long as the name is in the good graces of the public eye.

Or just, you know, lift it off the ground for a moment.

Jacques Anquetil lent his name to some bikes that were unlikely to be seen in any peloton. But Anquetil was known to have a business savvy mercenary attitude toward professional cycling and was determined to benefit himself, and perhaps a few fellow cyclists, as much as the promoters.

Behold this gem. Breathe in the subtle sophisticated graphics. Smells like... francs.

Even zombie Jacques could still beat me in a time trial on this gas pipe mixte.

NYC is not exactly indicative of the rest of the country, but I get your point.

It's gotten so lunatic the last few years, they should change the city acronym from NYC to WTF.

As for those letters being removed, the big guy got paid before that anyway!

Reminds me of the recession, with the closed businesses, all with the "ghost" of the logo left behind after the sign was removed.

Like a Pinarello decal.
