aluminum foil works! De-rusting spots on chrome!!
Hey just a heads up that removing rust on chrome is a super easy and cheap task with some 1. aluminum foil and 2. water.
then polish up with some metal polish for that high gloss.
No pictures at the moment, but my Miele looks brand new.
even removed the rust spots from the headset, easiest clean up job I had ever done!

I've tried the aluminum foil method and have not had good results...maybe I'm doing something wrong.

was it chromed steel?
from what i gather, aluminum is softer than chromo,, hence why it removes the rusty surface spots.
crushed foil is pretty abrasive, so i had my reservations, but i figured if its a fork and as real as steel, i didn't have much to lose.
if its a painted chromed aluminum fork, i can see problems....... what happeneD?

I just haven't had it remove rust. Maybe the rust was too deep, or maybe I needed to apply more force, but the foil did absolutely nothing.

I've used aluminum foil and lemon juice on chromed steel with excellent results. I picked up the tip here. I wish I could remember who posted it -- it was a big help.

I used it on light rust with great success... I did have to use more elbow grease with heavier spots, and it's not perfect for that but I like how it doesn't do any damage. I was skeptical about it but it worked pretty well.

Which side of the foil do you use? I've read threads that stated both shiny and dull, and both insisted that's the only way to go. So which one was successful, shiny or dull?

Crumpled foil works great with a little lubricant. I usually use wd40 or nevrdull or something like that. Heavier rust takes some patience, but foil can also be used in combination with a brass brush and that speeds it up. Careful when using it to keep changing to fresh areas of the foil and change foil often (it's cheap, use a lot and get the heavy duty stuff) because harder rust/metal particles can get embedded into the foil and cause scratches.

That was before I knew of Oxalic Acid. Nowadays if I have a severely rusted frame, I think I'll go for the Oxalic. For surface rust and smaller jobs, Lemon juice and foil has done wonders for me.

yes, i haven't tried this OA stuff, but as long as the rust looks to be on the surface and not some severely scratched piece that has scratched off the chrome and started to rust into the bare metal, the foil made it a 15 min job.
there are a few swirling scratches, similar to swirling on the surface of the paint on a car, but i think any metal polish will get that out.
