Was This a Good Buy, SA Coaster Brake?
I just spotted, and bought, a SA coaster brake only rear hub on Amazon for about $17.00 + shipping. Total cost about $23. It was listed as only one left from Bikeworldusa. Not shown on their web site so I will see if it actually exists.
I presume it is NOS as it is not currently a listed item in the SA catalog. What did I get? How good is/was the SA coaster brake hub?

Is it a single-speed coaster or a 3-speed?

Kind of wondered how the SA coaster brake compares to Shimano or the old Sachs coaster brakes. I have seen statements on the web that the Sachs coaster was about the best ever made.
At the price I bought it as much out of curiosity as anything.

s/a coaster
if it's a nos british made hub it will have a phosphor bronze split brake sleeve that only contacts the shell when the brake is applied and its a good bet, british made and all but if it's a newer one its just a generic coaster made in taiwan with the S/A brand on it, they have 2 brake shoes that contact the shell at all times but only drag when brake is applied, the shoes are steel taiwan being cheap s#!t so dont wear out that fast but to me it's a bad design, phosphor bronze or brass againt steel being much better brake material.

Maybe so. But the SA three-speed coaster brake hubs were a big plus on the Raleigh Sports or LTD models, in my humble opinion. The steel rims on those bikes rendered the calipers useless in the wet, and the coaster brake was at least somewhat functional. When I was a kid, my sister had a Raleigh LTD with a caliper in the front and a three-speed SA coaster brake hub. Seemed like a sensible setup.
