Wow, that brings back some memories. Hard to believe I used to be able to build a bike like that for a couple hundred bucks.
Black stem is an Origin8 piece from Niagara. I bet they still sell them. Decals came from the vinatge cannondale site, I think. One may still be able to special order them in gold.
Cannondale frames are getting harder to find and more expensive, plus you can't find the top tube cable guides any more. What a shame, I made a lot of people very happy with those SR and ST bikes...

Is there a paint system you would recommend? Why did the early bikes have paint chip issues?

As for the paint chipping it is a mystery to me, my 83 ST500 has no chipping issues while my 85 ST500 looks like a Dalmatian. I do know that my 85 spent a great deal of time stored outside so that could be a factor?

I am not sure about media blasting and aluminum, I have never done it. I have heard that media blasting is bad for thin aluminum frames but like I said, I don't know for sure. Maybe some other guys can chime in about their experiences but I have heard that chemical stripping is best.

I will probably chemically remove the paint on an SR frame. My guess is the early paint issues were corrected in prep. A lot can go wrong in the prep and show up sometime later after usage.

Why is PC out of the question? On a Cannondale frame, it's not like there is any lug detailing that would be lost.

But this one turned out really nice: '88 ST frame (desireable to many because the later filleting was nicer and it came with front fork braze ons for panniers) powder coated in gloss black with new decals, 105 triple FD/RD, Truvative Touro triple crankset, Nitto bars and stem, DA 9 speed downtube shifters, 12/27 Ultegra cassette, Tektro brake calipers and their old style (pre-anatomic lever) brake levers, 105 hubs on Aerohead rims, Rando 28's and a Sella Italia XO saddle. PLus some of my last new top tube cable guides.

Gorgeous Doc! Did you do catalog photo shots in a previous life? Such detail with the stems at the bottom and the tire markings precise on the stems. Looks too nice to tour on.

These pictures are of my wife's 86 SR500. I chose this bike because 2 guides are new and one is original. These particular guides were ordered with a matte black texture and don't match the originals exactly but sure beat the electrical tape that was on it when I bought it. This bike was my wife's birthday present last year and she did her first century on it (actually 150 miles because we rode to the event and back home).

Thanks for the nice words, she is pretty happy with how it turned out. The saddle color is called "ochre", it used to be much lighter but has darkened quite a bit with use.

Yes. I'm going to experiment with one by drilling a hole through the locating nubs, splitting the nubs like the originals and then using a short section of a paper clip to anchor the guide. I can also remove the nubs, drill through the guide and try a pop rivet. I just don't think gluing them onto the paint is the best option, in particular for the front guide.
