Cannondale frames are getting harder to find and more expensive, plus you can't find the top tube cable guides any more. What a shame, I made a lot of people very happy with those SR and ST bikes...
Since powdercoat is out of the question for me I'm looking at a media blast on the frame and repaint.

Is there a paint system you would recommend? Why did the early bikes have paint chip issues?

I am not sure about media blasting and aluminum, I have never done it. I have heard that media blasting is bad for thin aluminum frames but like I said, I don't know for sure. Maybe some other guys can chime in about their experiences but I have heard that chemical stripping is best.

As for the paint chipping it is a mystery to me, my 83 ST500 has no chipping issues while my 85 ST500 looks like a Dalmatian. I do know that my 85 spent a great deal of time stored outside so that could be a factor?

Baking soda blasting can remove paint from aluminum cans without any damage.
Can anyone confirm that Cannondale used thicker walls than Anheuser Busch?

Blasting aluminum can be done without damage but it really depends on pressure, technique and media type and grit. I sandblasted my son's 1981 PK Ripper (looptail, holy grail bike among vintage BMX'ers) and repainted/rebuilt it for racing on the Waterford Oaks track. No ill effects and the rattlecan results were satisfactory.

I will probably chemically remove the paint on an SR frame. My guess is the early paint issues were corrected in prep. A lot can go wrong in the prep and show up sometime later after usage.

Why is PC out of the question? On a Cannondale frame, it's not like there is any lug detailing that would be lost.

The bike shop in Traverse City will media blast and powder coat for $150, but if you bring them a couple of frames at once, the price drops dramatically. Also, save more if they don't have to pack and ship.

That's above my budget for this build although in another springtime I might go that route. I first need to build this thing.

Thanx for the tip. TC is only a bit over an hour away.

Could very well be the last Cannondale for a while to come out of The Lab. Frames are getting tough to find at a decent price. But this one turned out really nice: '88 ST frame (desireable to many because the later filleting was nicer and it came with front fork braze ons for panniers) powder coated in gloss black with new decals, 105 triple FD/RD, Truvative Touro triple crankset, Nitto bars and stem, DA 9 speed downtube shifters, 12/27 Ultegra cassette, Tektro brake calipers and their old style (pre-anatomic lever) brake levers, 105 hubs on Aerohead rims, Rando 28's and a Sella Italia XO saddle. PLus some of my last new top tube cable guides.

Mount up and head across country:

And just for BG, the gratuitous headbadge shot:

rccardr, Very nice! I've some of the 3D reproductions on the way for my beater T bike. I'll post up info after I have them mounted.

Gorgeous Doc! Did you do catalog photo shots in a previous life? Such detail with the stems at the bottom and the tire markings precise on the stems. Looks too nice to tour on.

For those of you who have been following my work for the past several years, the ST above is an obverse homage to The Yellow Submarine.

Doc,

Fantastic! Too bad you couldn't source the decals in the same shade of yellow. That would have been a neat touch!

rccardr,

I love the black and yellow. I have a 1987 black R-600 that has red trim. You've got me thinking of going yellow, next time I wrap the bars… Your bike looks fabulous.

Can I get a link to those? I need to restore mine.

I installed three of them on the beater using Krazy Glue very sparingly. I have three more to experiment with trying to make a more OEM type of attachment.

Aha. Those are the ones with the rough surface that have to be glued on?

Yes. I'm going to experiment with one by drilling a hole through the locating nubs, splitting the nubs like the originals and then using a short section of a paper clip to anchor the guide. I can also remove the nubs, drill through the guide and try a pop rivet. I just don't think gluing them onto the paint is the best option, in particular for the front guide.

So, the repops from Shapeway have the nubbins but wont snap in tight?

They snap in snugly, but can be popped out with light to medium effort.

Ok, thanx. I am having our dealer look for this grail part for me but will probably end up ordering the Safeway versions.
