Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NBD Contend 1

Yesterday I sold my Roam and upgraded to a 2017 Contend 1. I know it's entry level but that's exactly what I am. It was a bit of an impulse buy actually. I was out on my Roam that I purchased last year. It was windy and I felt like I was just fighting the bike to get to 10 mph. I decided to cut my ride short and go get fitted for a road bike.

There was a time 10 years ago when dropping $2000 on a new guitar or amp wouldn't have phased me but I've got a wife, 2 kids, 2 cars and a mortgage now so getting even a $1500 bike is just not in the cards for a few more years. I was going to go used but after riding this Contend 1 and a Defy 3 that was similarly spec'd I couldn't believe what a dramatic difference it was. They had me ride about a mile down a hill then come back uphill into the wind and it was like it was nothing.

I was instantly hooked. So I put a down payment on it so they wouldn't sell as they were the only two road bikes they had in stock under $1000. I had intended to pay it off next month. Amazingly, I was able to sell my Roam on Craigslist in about 2 hours. So today I picked up the Contend. Unfortunately I am working and it's supposed to rain the rest of the day so I won't really get to take it out until tomorrow but I did get outside to snap some pictures. I absolutely love this color. I am super stoked and can't wait to put it through its paces.

What's that clear, plastic thing on the rear wheel?

Tupperware cover.

I applaud the selection of non-black as your bike color!

I think it's to protect the spokes if your chain flies off. My Roam had one too but it wasn't nearly as noticeable.

Good solid bike. Spending another thousand bucks wouldn't have done much for you. Is the FD mount secured to the frame with rivets? Kind of odd for an alu frame.

Indyfabz was being facetious Some people also call it a 'dork disk', as it is deemed unnecessary if your RD limit is set up properly. But don't let that bother you. Ride it like you own it.

LOL no offense taken. I'm just going to go ahead and leave it there. No one will notice it when they see me in my matching bib and jersey that I ordered to accentuate the bike. I'm not the type to where Lycra normally but if I'm going to do it then I'm gonna do it in the loudest way possible.

Oh, you're going to be surprised at how much time and money you'll put into buying skin tight clothing with a padded bottom.

Congrats on the bike. Speaking from personal experience, if and when you have your first crash that bends your rear derailleur hanger, that disc will keep your chain from chewing up your wheel spokes. Ride with it proudly, fellow Giant rider.

So I had my first ride with it. Only had an hour due to work but what a fun bike. I did about 15 miles all in all. I was taking it easy, getting used to the shifters, gears, and riding position. It just feels like I'm flying now. I wish I would have done this 15 years ago. Now my biggest struggle is going to be sneaking away from the family for long enough to do some real distances.

Actually, it will become more noticeable. People who wear matching gets tend to have their bikes scrutinized more. You won't hear it, but behind your back people will say "Sheesh. Dude has a matching kit yet still has a dork disk."

Great Bike. I bought one for my son a few months ago and he rides it nearly every day. Enjoy.
