Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

my failed century attempt or...

...my successful 60 miles.

i think i have attempted a century once before. i failed that time as well. maybe i just go in with the wrong train of thought. i say to myself "if i feel good ill just keep going, i can always turn around but the GOAL is 100 miles."

so today i embarked with that in mind. i had the time, i felt great, i was going to do it!

within the first five miles i decided i wanted to kind of get lost. i wanted to go on new roads so i would not get completely bored.

so i started through old town down a road i have been on once or twice. some old town shop.

turns out getting lost isn't so great. lots of "not a through street" streets in san diego.

back to familiar roads. pacific coast highway by lindbergh field.

petco park to the right.

shipping yard/ coronado bridge.

NASCO and the dry docs. i worked a season here.

the strand.

SATA. salt.

so around mile 40 i get the thought that kills my century chances, "i"m hungry".

no way i was doing another 60 miles with that in the tummy.

i end up with a triple tone tan line for my efforts.

i reward failure.

i dont think i can do one of these alone. i simply got bored and by mile 30 i was thinking "i basically have to do 3 more of these?!". maybe having the company of a few riders helps. maybe i should just HTFU.

I attempted my first century last weekend. Got to mile 40 and turned around, as I was getting to where I could see myself getting lost in the country side. Turned around. Ended up being 79 miles.

Tough to do 100 miles just wandering around your area. Plan something that takes you away from your familiar area so that you've got to ride the second half just to get back home...and no stoppin' for hoagies! That's post-ride food!

I wouldn't mind banging out a century before summer is over, let's do it.

that was kinda sorta the plan, it failed when my out was only 30 miles. and as far as the hoagie goes, i knew i was in trouble when i violently devoured my two nutra grain bars and was lusting for more food. i definitely have to plan it out better next time.

Ya for sure. I have a buddy that lives in chula vista, he has taken be to a few ghetto taco shops in the hood. The food is usually really cheap and tasty.

Haha, well at least you seem to be a half glass full kind of guy. I definitely understand where you are coming from, hit that first percentage portion and to think you have to do that multiple times over again. Unfortunately cycling is almost all mental. I don't know how those ultra guys can do it, and do multiple 100s in a week by themselves.

I couldn't possibly fathom doing a century in a city setting.... too many stop lights killin my buzz. Too many hills, also makes it a bit too hard (for the first few).

Bang out some hills for the first fifty miles. If you can survive that, then do whatever on flat ground for the last 50. Easy as failure pie

I think that either listening to music in one ear, or just being a paranoid schizophrenic help pass the time quite a bit.

We could head out from Hermosa Beach, climb Piuma, descend Las Flores then go up the coast and turn around and come back, that one will put the hurt on.

I handful of summers ago I was kinda out of shape, just doing my lazy, flat 8 mile round trip M-F commute. I just started heading out along the train route, figuring there were a few stops before 100 miles where I could bail out and catch a train home. It wasn't 'til the third attempt that I made it all the way to Tumwater. All were nice rides, though.

The one I finally completed that summer, I ate way worse than that at about the 40 mile point. Greasy cheeseburger, fries and shake.

I just sort of randomly ride centuries. My favorite lunch time food is usually a foot long veggie sub of some sort.

Solo centuries are more difficult. If you promise to go easy on us, you can join our next one.

I've only completed one century with the same start/finish line, but several point to point. Riding out to a location 100 miles away just has much more allure to me.

I consider myself lucky to live where I can jump on a train that takes bikes that will take me home from 100 miles away.

You guys should go ride some of the RUSA 200k brevets. There's usually a supportive group going, so you're highly likely to finish and have a great time. https://rusa.org/

fyi, if you want real mexican food, the Hyatt is only about twenty minutes from the U.S. - Mexican border.
