Do you road riders race cyclocross?
I'm going to race cyclocross this fall for the first time - just got a bike yesterday. How many of you:

Yes, and this season I'm going to try SS 'cross.

Can't justify getting a whole other bike for a two-month cross "season" (around here anyway)...
Having said that, I might borrow someone's bike and give it a whirl this season; fishtailing/drifting through corners looks like fun!

I drink beer, but I don't race cross. Really, our "off season" around here is July, August, and December, so there's not much time for dabbling in other things...

Bingo. And you don't need a great quality bike to race cross. Anything you can beat up and hose off will do if you aren't centering your athletic world around the sport. I race cross, but not seriously. It's bordering on a requirement if you race bikes in Portland.

I do both. Great fun.
... and if Racer Ex makes another crack about cross and F1, I'm coming out to Texas, breaking into his house, and installing cantis and knobby tires on his Kestrel.

I didn't think I'd like it but got hooked. It actually makes me feel like I'm a kid again. Plus, it's only as serious or hard as you make it.

does it count if I only race cross for fun and fitness? I race SS against geared guys and I have like zero MTB skills, so I get ass-on-platter a'la mode.
Of course since I don't care I keep doing it just for the workout.

I absolutely race both. I even am even helping with sponsoring the Chicago Cyclocross Cup series this year.
Best shape for road I have ever been in was after a long "off season" of cross.
Cross is a lot of fun and is a great way to flip the switch from road after a long season. Physically cross is the toughest thing I have ever done on a bike. Period. Average HR of 4 beats higher than in crits.
It is a blast too.

Just got a beater cross bike, it arrives on Wednesday. Super psyched, especially since injury has put the kibbosh on my road season. I'm just starting to get back on the bike now, so hopefully I'll be up and running (through mud) come race time! I'm excited to go to a big field and practice running on and off. And falling on and off as well.

Yup,
Road is just a prelude to cross. Great thing about cross is that equipment doesn't matter. Tire choice and tire pressure is the only thing that makes a difference, plus choosing and maintaining components that won't fall apart during a race.
I race a 9 year old Trek XO-1. Al frame/fork. Stiff as heck - good for the midwest. Not good for Colorado. No strong desire to upgrade, can't afford it anyway. Also, I do get that inverse snob pleasure whenever I pass someone on a carbon Pinarello, with Zipp 303s and Dugasts. Get a lot of that around here.
Got a bunch of podiums last year. Upgraded. Hope to snag a few top 10s this year.

I do both and will begin to start doing more cross specific training after next week's Masters Nationals in KY. Cross racing is hard, however the atmosphere is more laid back both before and after the races.

I +1 those who said cross is the most fun thing on two wheels.
I love racing crits, but cross is not serious if you don't want it to be and you can have a LOT of fun goofing off during a race.

I'm hoping to do some 'cross this winter. I have most of what I need for a build, still need cranks, headset, shifters and derailers... the most expensive stuff, of course. Hopefully my MTB skills (such as they are) haven't totally worn off over the last year.
