My Little Cannondale Criterium Build

This build started back in January when I lost out on an '87 SR600 at 225.00 on our local Craigslist. While I sulked in disappointment I had a rare peek at our ISO/Trade thread. It was there I found a gem of a frameset from @bobotech . We Cannondale fans love to read about these bikes and everybody loves a little build. Here we go.....

Here we go with the prep for new paint. Topcoat will be a gorgeous metallic black. You can see the remnants of the factory blue. Yesterday I started with a few shots of primer but wont complete the process until I can shoot in my unheated garage.

OldsCool, I have to wait on the weather to paint my SR also. The revised goal is to have it an off-white like the early '60s Fords, pretty pedestrian fare.

A cannondale Criterium is the only bike I really regret selling. When I got back into cycling at 30 years old, I bought a mint condition robins egg blue 12 speed. I think it was an 87 and I rode it for two years and realized it was worth a whole lot more than what I bought it for so I sold it to get the shiny new light road bike. Wish I knew then what I know now. I'll have another when the time is right. They are great bikes, fast and smooth, I think I could ride no hands all day on the old criterium. Enjoy.

I took one little ride last summer and that was enough for me. They are difficult to find without having to battle off other buyers.

The more I think about this I think I need two of them. One original, and one with sti's and light racey wheels!

The one with the light racey wheels....yeah. That's what I'm doing (using SIS DT shifters).

I kind of like them with DT shifters.

I'm painting the frameset black for a Black Lightning effect, components (minus RD) are blackout for a sinister appearance. So while I await warmer weather for topcoat I decided to shoot a little test on the seatpost. This is a PlastiKote universal metallic black. The metallic to my pleasant surprise is gold. This will figure well with the Black Lightning theme.

Was that powdercoat or spray paint? If it's paint, what kind is it?

I just experienced some minor paint lift (it was a slight gamble on paint composition worth the risk). I'm back to paint shopping.

That one was powdercoated.

Been a couple years since I did the last BL repro but bought an '86 SR frame the other day & was thinking of doing another one: gloss black powder coat, 3TTT black stem, 3TT Due dark chrome bars, Ultegra 6500 crank/fd/rd/brakeset, Shimano black R500 wheelset, 10 speed DT shifters, R400L or (if I can find them at a decent price) Tektro R200L brake levers in black.

They just look so darn cool....

OldsCOOL, The paint lift maybe because it was applied when too cold? Try again when it's warmer.

Take a look at the 6700-G (grey). It's almost black.

That was my first guess. I've doing parts to check for compatibility and all has been fine until this afternoon. The paint is an acrylic lacquer and I'm not familiar with the acrylic component. The primer has held up to this point. Oh well. I hate this waiting for warmer weather.

Still havent painted the frame. This subzero weather looks to be leaving us since it's -26F arrival on Christmas week. This morning it's a sunny -5F. This is not the Yukon or Pt Barrow.

Since there are no 50deg days showing well into April I wl have to wait until May....or sling together a method to heat my shop. This is really beginning to CRAMP my style. Ugh.

When painting the frame, what do you do about the brake cable guides on the top tube?

According to other threads here at Bikeforums, the plastic cable guides can have their pins pushed IN to the frame and then recovered through the head tube.
