Rattle can frame and aluminium foil removes rust!

My sister currently has a old bike which she wants sorted out for the summer!

the paint colour isnt nice and has quite a few rust spots, i was thinking of just sanding the whole lot of and rattle canning it! cheap and cheap option! has any one done this to their bike, if so did it work!?

On another note,
The stem, handle bars where also rusty in places so i had look online to see the best way to remove it, i came across the idea of using aluminium tin foil and water. It worked a treat! God knows why! Just wondering if anyone had any idea why it worked? :s

my guess is that the foil is harder than the rust but softer than the steel of the frame, the water's a lubricant to facilitate the balance of friction. But i'm an event planner/musician and not a scientist so that's mostly a guess.

Yeah it just seemed so simple with all these specific rust removers around, and one bit of foil and some water does the same if not a better job!

yeah, simple remedies are good to know. If your lock is jamming up a good simple remedy for that is to put some graphite from a mechanical pencil in there. The key with crush it into powder when you insert and the graphite cleans and lubricates the lock better than wd-40(really just a cleaning fluid and not a lube). Good luck with your bike

I like the use of exclamation points in this thread.

Many people have stripped, sanded, and spray-painted their frames. It usually comes out okay. It looks better if you do a primer coat, sand between coats, do a lot of layers, and then some kind of sealing coat. It won't be as durable as the original paint job. If you're willing to drop some ducats you can look into powdercoating, which runs usually like $100, IIRC, for a frame and fork.

Some think scratches & a little rust require a complete frame & fork repaint. It'll ride just fine with some TLC and touch up just like a complete repaint.

Aluminium foil and lemon juice is the bomb for removing rust and making chrome glow.
