Has geometry changed since the 1990's
I been riding my 1993 Rockadile rigid no shock mtb that I recently acquired for free and noticed that it feels faster quicker in how it responds, even climbs well.
My normal ride is a gary fisher decent bike that feels like a truck. Front end a lot higher and less twitchy........

Yes, lots, back in 1993, the long travel suspension would have been a Mag 21 with LT kit @ 60mm, now 100-120mm is standard for XC, 120-160 for AM/Enduro/whatever todays descriptive is. This gives you a higher front end as you have noted.
It's not just the geometry, BITD stems woudl be 140mm ish, now over 100mm is long, handlebars were 540/560mm straight, now anything upto about 900mm goes, most riders will be have from 680-740mm risers.
Then theres the whloe wheel size debate, 26", 650b/27.5 or 29er, take your pick.
All that said, still no reason why you can't enjoy a the bike you have as it was free.

Geometry has changed a ton! I rode a 1994 Nitro for years. I was insulted when it was reffered to as a brick. I loved my bike! Then I got a new bike with modern suspension and geometry in 2010. WHOA, huge difference! The poor ole brick started gathering dust and last spring was sold to a high schooler!

My last mtb was a '97 Trek hardtail (back when friends didn't let friends buy Treks) and I recently bought a 2013 Giant 29er hardtail. Completely different ride. I much prefer the newer bikes with their large wheels and modern geometry.

Had a 96 Hoo Koo E Koo, one of the last steel framed GFs. Wanted to keep that thing in the worst way. Put a 00 Manitou shock with rebound control on it and took it to the local trail. Compared to the 05 Rockhopper, it would not handle at all. It was sloppy, all over the trail. Since moved on to a 08 Stumpy that makes the 05 Rockhopper look pretty dated. I'm sure a 2014 Stumpy would be much better than the 08. And so it goes.

During my summer race season, my 2012 Santa Cruz Superlight was down with a shock being repaired so I got out my 1990 Fisher Paragon. It climbed great but was super twitchy otherwise. I tried to ride it like a modern bike and went OTB in a bad way--worst crash I've ever had. It's not just the geo, everything has changed.

Last MTB I bought was my '98 Schwinn Moab 2. I decided to rebuild it this summer and do a disc brake conversion. I went to an LBS and test rode a 29er w/ disc. I liked the feel of the disc brake but felt like I was on a bike about 4 sizes too big. Ride, feel, everything was about as different going to that as it is going from my mountain bike to my road bike. Not good or bad just waaaaaay different...
