Welcome to C&V! I was considering a swap the other way....can you elaborate a bit on why they killed you? Something about positioning related to climbing, I'm assuming. Nice build, btw, and thanks for posting it!

Thanks! I've been looking at this thread for years...I love it! The mustache bars were ok when riding on the sides of the hoods, but I never could figure an angle that didn't hurt my hands on the straight section. and in the curves at the front I think my hands are too wide so there was alot of pressure on the outer edges of my hands. There are lots of hand positions but they all hurt after a pretty short while for me. I wanted to love those bars too because they looked so, so sexy on that bike. So if you are wanting some mustache bars I have a pair of origin8 Tiki bars for sale...cheap.

+1 I tried mustache bars for a while too but found they really only gave me two usable hand positions and weren't great for longer rides, although they look pretty cool. However they are now doing duty on my beater fixed gear which I rarely ride more than 5 miles at a time, so they're good for that. (Some folks love them though, so ymmv.)

Quick survey: what would be your choice for a bike similar to an early 90s Trek 750?
I've got a 750 that's too small for me which is a shame because it's a super bike. I'd like to set up a similar style bike as my all weather commuter. I love the mtb geometry & 700c tires, front rack braze ons, clearance for wide tires, etc.

If you are set on 700c bike, then I would definitely stick with rigid frame only, front suspension forks I have seen on hybrids are junky. Saw a Schwinn Cross Point for sale recently, very tempting. It was the top of the line model of the early 1990s Schwinn hybrid product line, made very briefly.
The early 1990s Trek hybrids are very popular and much easier to find.

Huh, funky. It looks like a mountain stem with a wide clamp and I've been unable to thread drop bars into those. It looks awesome on the bike, so that's cool that it allowed drop bars through.

Here's one I built up for my wife. Nothing super about it, but solid. We're gonna take this, and my Salsa Fargo on the John Wayne Pioneer Trail from Seattle to N. Idaho this next summer!

It is an OK setup. Nice to be able to reuse the Deore thumbies, they are rather good shifters. For a bike meant for commuting and weekend rides it is a great setup. Somewhat limits Your handposition on top of the bars but I'm OK With gripping the "elbows".

I just found this little bike last night. DX down to the pedals, shiny hardly used RM20 rims. Just a little rust on the chrome bits. This bike is going to make one of mountain bikes much nicer. I have never run across a Supergo before. Lots of interesting features on the frame. Offset pump peg, oval seat tube where it meets the bottom bracket. The Tange tubing decal even lists individual tube thicknesses? NEVER seen that done before. Seamless butted Chromoly. I REALLY wish this one fit.. I think my Maroon Urban Express might be on the receiving end. It also uses a 29.4 seatpost? is that weird or what?,,,,BD

I am also going to have a closer look above that tubing decal, right below the weld. It might be cracked? The wheels look perfectly straight though. If it is, the purchase price was worth it for the components and wheels alone.,,,,BD

I used to pore over the Supergo bikes in the catalogs BITD. Nice and cheap for the parts specs.
That is a crazy seattube diameter. Tange must have been making fat seattubes for someone else also, and Supergo got 'em from the same Taiwan shop.

Fixed cup on the BB is frozen on it. A shame since everything is such great shape minus a little neglect. I think maybe in a couple of hours when it gets light out, I will try a C clamp and a couple of pieces of wood to hold the wrench on while I tap it with a hammer. There wasn't a speck of dirt or rust on the threads of the other side, so it may just be super tight.
I also have a Taiwan frame made for Santa Fe, that has a lot of the same features, including the fat headset and literally the same paint job. They probably came from the same factory.,,,,BD
