I apologize for asking in this thread, but my google-fu is not answering it: What's the deal with the Supercourse? Is it straight-guage 531 in the three main tubes only?

Mountain Bike - Trek 850 - $60 (Escondido)
https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/...652255414.html

I bought this one after some research. Got it for $50. It's a 1988 in great condition, all original where it counts. Back in 88, 870 was their top steel ATB, so this was 2nd in line. Deore 6 speed with Araya RM-20 rims (I a have a thing for those rims haha).

This one could be a little big and the hype is real but more nostalgic I think.

These certainly helped launch a million MTB's and were great bikes to be sure but not everybody's cup of tea.

I love them for their iconic status and Merz's connection to their development.

Thanks for the additional info. Too late however, It is sold. Even if I took the choppa it wouldn’t be fast enough from where I am.

google -fu can't get you there, yes only 3 main tubes.

They can and do punch way above their weight, plain and simple.

At Eroica 2017 we took my light green all original Merz touring and my sons gold SC just about identical to this one.

We had tag teamed it for Christmas, it turned out fantastic and he loved it more than any bike he had before it.

We got to the motel and there were a lot of folks walking around looking at and talking bikes, I put ours outside the room while we unpacked and organized the room.

At one point there was quite a bit of commotion outside our room, I go out and 5 or 6 people are pouring over the SC, with the Merz sitting right next to it!

I knew about them already having had one of my own many years ago so I wasn't that shocked, butt hurt, but not surprised.

The next day at the concourse, same thing, the SC was leaned against a tree off to the side so we could keep an eye on it, steady stream of looky loos all day long there too.

It was eventually stolen off the front of a tri-met bus when he didn't keep an eye on it.

They are pretty much all 3 tubes straight gauge until you get to the supercourse 12. It's 3 tube double butted. I've had both and I have to say both are good framesets. I prefer the 12.

The comment you'll always hear about the SC, and somebody made it above, is that they "punch above their weight." Yes, the frame is as you described, but the SC is a quicker, better handling, comfortable all-rounder than maybe it oughta be. Paint colors and schemes throughout the years looked great too. Combine all that with a typically low price and that makes the SC a favorite around here. I think even Sheldon Brown called the frame "worthy of upgrades," or something similar.

Plenty of experienced touring riders, including some Bike Forums posters, use aero bars. My grocery getter/winter training bike has 38-mm tires, fenders, flat bars, and an aero bar.
