Yeah, well, it looks like my back-of-envelope calc was a bit too hasty.
Here's my spreadsheet showing bending stiffness ratio of aluminum to steel. As you can see, aluminum is slightly less stiff, but the difference is less with larger diameter tubing:

- Young's modulus (Gpa): Steel 7.85, Aluminum 69
- Density (g/cm^3): Steel 200, Aluminum 69
- Wall thickness (in): Steel 0.04, Aluminum 0.116
