Could the curly stays come around sometime in the modern period? How iconic were these British steeds, or were they just going for a gimmick?

70s Schwinn Paramounts with a contemporary flare

Townie build with nice parts include a kickback hub. If anyone is interested in splitting this, I could actually use the wheelset and can facilitate the rest for you. I'd be tempted to buy the whole thing if it fit me.
I wonder how that lightweight Reynolds531 frame will respond to a twospeed SA kickback

In other news, there was a fellow thinning his supposed worthy herd of early seventies Paramounts advertising in different C-list US locations, claiming to be a nephew of his ailing uncle and not accepting any other forms of payments besides online. He also claimed to be a trucker that said would pass through these locations, where he would advertised. I SMELLED A SCAM, nonetheless and had to make a hard pass on a too-good-to-be-true scenario.

Old, l'eroica bike exemplars such as these have always intrigued with their indistinguishable size. I suspect it may have something to do with the geometry mainly HT angle) and the length of the top tube. Its almost impossible to tell any size +58cm. This one looks like a 24in, which is practically a ten millimeter difference than what the OP suggests. How much does it really matter though? You gotta go for that all-encompassing, French fit!

I grew up just 90 minutes from that area. The greater Chicago metropolis has anything but a shortage of bike boom European bikes made in Asia. A highlight of mine was when I got an eighties Stumpjumper Sport with a bi-plane fork for twenty dollars from a resident near the Hoffman Estates.

The North Bay area certainly does have its berth in these "community sales"- whether its through a non-profit, user swap meets, or hell, even at the local flea market! There was a nice 80s sequoia specialized in my size at a community bike source near Santa Rosa. Kicking myself regardless for not following up!

Apparently the curly stays were to provide some butt suspension.
From https://www.hetchins.org/history.htm
Jack recalled a curly frame that he had seen on a stand at the Lightweight Cycle Exhibition at the Floral Hall. It had been made by Maurice Selbach who had said it was just a fancy idea. Not to Jack it wasn't! If the front forks curve to absorb road shocks, he thought, then why shouldn't I try to do the same thing with the rear stays?
He built his first frame with a gentle curve in the seat stays and the 'S' bend in the chain stays. The idea worked, the bends did damp the road shocks, but there was an unexpected benefit. The 'S' removed a great deal of the flexing of the bottom bracket zone.
The frame was given to one of the hard men of cycling to try, Harry Rothwell. In order to toughen himself and to test the frame thoroughly, Harry carried two house bricks in his saddle bag.
...
The development work was now completed and in 1932 [sic -- should be 1934] the Rear Vibrant Triangle (patent No 33317) and the Hetchins Vibrant Triangle (Patent No 443454) were taken out. The curly Hetchins was born. [There were not two patents, as O'Neill here suggests, but only one. --Editor]
And they are still being made: https://www.hetchins.org/903.htm

I'm not a fan of the curly stay look myself, but they were always optional I think.

A local friend has a Vade Mecum with straight stays. He didn't know what model it was, so I did a little investigating. Doug Fattic identified it as a Vade Mecum Mk 1. The hetchins.org website has a page showing that the model is defined by the lugs. Apparently, the stay treatment is an option.

Vintage 60 or 61 Bianchi Specialissima - $3,650 (Westford, MASSACHUSETTS, US)

Vintage 1960 or 1961 Bianchi Specialissima for Sale. This is a spectacular opportunity for any collector of fine vintage Italian bicycles. This Bianchi appears to be all original with very limited original patina. This bike has NOT been restored or modified from its original specification. With consideration paid to the presence of old tires, this bike is fully ready to ride. All Campagnolo components, as delivered, with Universal brakes. Comes with the original FIAMME wheelset and a set of more modern Ambrosio 19 Elite wheels (1980's), as installed on the bike in the pictures. The extra wheelset is even properly setup with Campagnolo hubs. This Bianchi Specialissima comes with the original Brooks B17 saddle and a period correct seat bag. I also have a silica frame pump that will come with the bike. This bike is spectacular in all the correct ways with the only drawback being that for some reason the headtube badge is missing, the mounting screws are present. I have installed new bar tape that might not be the very best choice for a period correct presentation, but it is comfortable if you plan to use the bike, obviously easily changed to your preference.

British bikes have sensibility. Their in-house framebuilders including Mercian, Bob Jackson, Woodrup, and the like all have their hands on the pulse of what the customer wants. Their longstanding tradition has certainly gained fans from all over the world, myself included. I've had numerous occasions where I could've pulled the trigger on a pre-built showroom frameset from Mercian for next to two grand (inc. shipping). I can only imagine what the pursuit for a grail-like custom Hetchins frameset would be like... it would be epic. One can only hope; one day.

That's as rare as they come. Seen one go for a thousand and change in the northeast a while ago. Haven't seen one since. Only time I've seen one remotely close to this rare find was a sixties bianchi as a display model at a local bike shop in San Jose. Donno if it was a specialissima though. I guess that's why it's called that name: the most special.

If the market forces work the same for vintage bikes as in the vintage electric guitar market, parts and accessories - since they're generally cheaper (and cheaper to ship) than bikes or complete instruments - will probably continue to be bought and sold at roughly the same price levels, at least until the people whose purchases are mostly motivated by nostalgia age out.

One interesting data point from the U.S. guitar market (make what you will of this regarding bikes): Guitar Center, which is by far the biggest presence in the bricks-and-mortar musical instrument business in the U.S., recently announced that because their stores are substantially overstocked with used instruments, amplifiers, effects pedals, etc., they are severely cutting back on the number of used items they will consider for purchase or trade-ins.

Impressive dents in top tube. No drive side pic, looks like an '84. What parts are still on it? Crank should cover the cost of admission

I have that same bike except I got mine as a frame and fork and then I had all Suntour Superbe stuff put on it. Anyway, if the bike is stock, which I'm sort of wondering since the stem is not original, but the Campy New Record components, if still on, would for sure be worth the $60, the brakes look original so that's good news, the wheels look original too which means there's a good chance the hubs are too. So just for the parts the price is worth it, assuming the parts aren't all chewed up as bad as the frame is because I ponder why the picture isn't on the drive side!?

Some of the bikes have come down, but others have gone up, not sure what that's all about. For example; my 84 Fuji Club I bought at a garage for $40 about 13 years ago was worth $800 about 5 years ago, today it's down to around $450; however my Raleigh Competition GS was worth about $500 5 years ago has gone up to over $1,500! Why did those two react in two different directions over the same period of time? There are more Raleigh Competitions for sale then there is Fuji Clubs so you would think the number for sale would affect the prices, so I don't know, but that just goes to prove, don't buy a vintage bicycle thinking you're going to make money, because the market is fickle. Buy a vintage bike for the joy that it brings you instead and don't worry about selling it for more money. This is true with any type of collection from vintage cars, to coins, to stamps, etc, etc, etc.
