Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You're right, I worded my explanation wrong. But my arithmetic does not make that mistake.

I just edited my post to correct the mistake.

Yeah, well, it looks like my back-of-envelope calc was a bit too hasty.

Here's my spreadsheet showing bending stiffness ratio of aluminum to steel. As you can see, aluminum is slightly less stiff, but the difference is less with larger diameter tubing:

Numbers used:
  • Young's modulus (Gpa): Steel 7.85, Aluminum 69
  • Density (g/cm^3): Steel 200, Aluminum 69
  • Wall thickness (in): Steel 0.04, Aluminum 0.116
If you make the wall thinner, the difference is less. This is for steel 0.02", aluminum 0.058:
