Front derailleur
New here and new to road biking. Bought a used road bike in very good shape but the “nub” that catches the spring is broken off. What can i replace it with, the derailuer that is. The one on there now is a (gonna write everything I see) Shimano Tiagra 31.8 FD 4408 9 speed.

Few questions for you to clear-up and hopefully others will be along to help you.
Is the # 4408 or 4403?
Overall does the bike seem to have mostly Tiagra parts? Shifters, crankset, rear derailleur? So we can judge if this bike is mostly a complete OEM build.
Triple crankset?
Nine cogs in the rear?

It seems you have a Tiagra 9-speed triple front derailleur with a 31.8 mm (1-1/4") diameter clamp. They aren't that expensive if you find a direct replacement but a 1-1/4" clamp isn't all that common. You may do better to find a 1-1/4" diameter accessory clamp and use a "braze-on" front derailleur. You could use a 9-speed triple front derailleur from the 105 group too and it would be a FD-5503.

The next series Tiagra, FD-4503 for triple was also still 9 speed and should be fine.
Another upgrade would be FD-6503, Ultegra level.
Newer 105 & Ultegra (x600) series are 10 speed. Since I don't use a triple crankset, not sure how a 10 speed FD would work on a 9 speed. Maybe someone who uses this combo will share their experiences.
MTB FD have different chain cage shape for optimum shifting for smaller chainrings (42t-46t) and not road rings (50t-53t).

I can’t seemnto find any of the suggested replacements new. Several used, beat up ones. Also, thanks for the great info. Learning a lot.
