Ride In Peace, Sheldon Brown
Sheldon Brown, July 14, 1944 - February 3, 2008
Cycling in all of its varied forms lost a true giant yesterday with the passing of Sheldon Brown from a massive heart attack. The Harris Cyclery web site says this:
"Dear Harris Cyclery friends and customers,
It is with heavy hearts that we convey to you the news that Sheldon Brown has passed away. Our thoughts go out to his family at this time. The cycling community has lost one of it's most passionate members."
I found this entry of his recent medical history in a Wikipedia entry about him:
"In August 2007 Sheldon was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. After losing his ability to balance an upright bicycle to the disease, he was able to continue pedaling by using a recumbent tricycle."
I know he was probably more known on other forums; but if you spent any amount of time twisting wrenches on a bike (and occasionally getting frustrated), chances are you stumbled on his encyclopedic plethora of pages about bike mechanics.
It should be noted here too that Sheldon was a BikeForums member (https://www.bikeforums.net/member.php?u=3316) and regular contributor. He was a real personable gentleman who always took the time to answer a question, no matter how left-field it may have seemed. He will really be missed.

That's a shame, I remember his post last year about his multiple sclerosis and how it would slow him down some. He will surely be missed by all.

I feel like I've gotten to know him a little bit through his website and his postings here, and I really respect his style, knowledge, and dedication to cycling - in all its forms.

Yes, sad news for sure. I bookmarked his amazing section on old raleighs after pulling my Mom and Dads 1953 Raleigh Sports bikes out of their basement. An unbelieveable amount of knowledge. RIP Sheldon...

I'm one of hundreds if not thousands of bicyclists for whom Sheldon took the time to send a personal answer to a bicycle-related question. His website has helped me immeasurably. I hope it will be maintained for a long time to come, both as an invaluable resource and as a tribute to him. The Goofy figure on my helmet was inspired by the eagle on his.
My condolences to his family. The man was a legend and a wonderful guy. To say he will be missed is an understatement. Adios, Sheldon.

The cycling world has lost one of it's finest ambassadors. My condolences to his family and friends. I have spent hours on his website, and his writings have helped me immensly as I get back into biking. Ride on, brother!

I think legacy is a very big underestimate. What sheldon left behind is a saga of long lasting impressions on anyone riding anything, road, MTB or any other sub category of biking and his passing will be sorely mourned by all.

I asked him a question about a bike I found at a garage sale. Very generous guy, who shared a lot of knowledge with anyone who needed some help. Sad to hear.
