Mountain bikes
Hey, I am a year 12 student and am doing a project at school. I need to find out faults with mountain bike brake cables getting tangled or in the way, And am going to design a component to stop this happening. Any comments or experiences where this has happened to you would be appreciated.

You might look at the Shimano AX front and rear derailleurs. They don't have the big loop of cable that other derailleurs have.
Of course, there is also various types of electronic shifting including wireless electronic shifting that is available.
Internal Gear Hubs?
There was also notes of a patent on a new frame mounted Shimano internal gear system.
Anyway, a lot of ideas that others have worked with.

Most ( at least newer/ mountain bikes) have hydraulic brakes, no issues ever. The problem does not exist.

Tough subject. Don't forget hydraulic hoses for disc brakes.
Normally, it's pretty simple to run or re-run one's cables and hoses to eliminate both tangles and interference. Have you looked at any recent production mountain bikes?
Sometimes those tiny clips that retain hoses on the brazed cable guides can "pop out" and disappear. Not a big deal, one can buy them by the gross for about $0.50 from China, or use a zip tie.

Slopestyle MTBers often route their front brake through the steerer tube to adress this problem and allow barspins.
