SoCal needs a long "Race Report" thread

Hello All,

Thought that I'd start something like this for the SoCal racers and those interested in local racing. This way we don't have to go looking around for the right racing thread that may only have a couple of posts in it.

So post your race reports and your "who's going to this race?" questions in this thread.

Of course if no one likes this idea it will die a natural forum death.

I love the idea. I'm not sure when my next race is, but I'll post my report:

At the start, it took me longer to clip in that everyone else. When I looked up, I was a quarter lap back. I didn't crash at all, because I was never in contact with the peleton, except for each of the four times they lapped me. Overall, a fun experience.

i actual prefer to have ride reports or any king (fun, organized, race, etc) in their own separate little thread... with the ride title as the subject! makes for easier navigation and when you are trying to find out about a certain ride.... can you imagine having a 20 page long thread with 20 different races? then you have to read every page to find the race you want to read about.... whereas if you make each race have its own proper thread.... you know whether it's one page or 20... it's all about that race (well... with the superfluous socal BS factored in! administratively it's just neater.... (having one thread is like throwing all your paperwork into one file folder!)

well since Del Mar was sold out, the team is doing the Redlands Crit on the 25th. I just signed up, only $15. Now I have a WEEK to do my training LOL.

Hi,

I guess some people like this idea and one person doesn't. We'll see how the thread lives or dies.

Jeff, I can hardly believe that they sold out a mid-week race series at Del Mar. Pretty amazing!

F = MA, the Torrance race info is on the SCNCA calendar (https://www.scnca.org/2006calendar.asp). It is definitely a pain that some races are on the socalcycling calendar and some are on the SCNCA calendar. I did two races, the Masters 45+ and Cat. 3 last year and the Masters was faster.

I think that my next big race will be the Garret Lemire race in Ojai on April 1st. I haven't done that race yet but I generally like circuit races with a hill.

Of course I will be at El Dorado Park as much as possible on Tuesday evenings.

Hey Cleave,
Ojai is an excellent course, and a good race with a very supportive town, good vibe all around it. I just put it on the family calendar, and I'm waiting to see if I get any objections If not, I'll race the Cat 4's and then get shelled in my first Masters 35+ race

The race they had this week on Weds, my teammates went down super early and it was sold out, only the one that pre reg'd got to race in the pack of 75 mixed with cat 4 n 5. He placed 8th and was the first cat 5 to cross the line.

It's COOL that roadie races are ALOT cheaper then MTB races. On the MTB races, my entree fees are $53 per race, seems more roadie races are 15-25 bucks!!!

On the 25th, there's the Redlands Criterium and the LAX Circuit Race. Anybody do either? I hate criteriums, but a clydesdale (me) is not a good climber. I'd like to start racing, and as Redlands is flat, I actually stand a chance of getting a good result (or at least finishing w/the main field...barring crashes).

Hi,

The LAX race has a rise in it (I hate to call it a hill). I haven't ridden Redlands in over a decade so I don't know the current course.

i haven't done the redlands crit but my friend whos pretty strong said it was a tough course ( i think that there's a hairpin turn?) as well as a hill. when i did redlands in the 80s they only had a road race through town

lax is pretty flat, the wind coming off the ocean is a much bigger issue. the field will be real slow going west into the wind and fast east. the finish line is going east. you have about a mile from the turn to the finish line with a tailwind and slight downhill. in the 3's a few years ago we were doing 42 before the sprint. the sprint is slightly uphill but it doesn't matter as you get a big run at it

Redlands has become kinda dangerous. No hills..less than a mile circuit with one 180, a few rights and a left. Very technical fast and bumpy. The start is everything as things get pretty well strung out.

I am on the fence on this one. I grew up in redlands so I am a homer and I dont mind the drive..but the LA Circuit race will give you more room to stretch your legs.

I am not sure why both events had to be the same day ? Redlands is a NRC but LA could be anytime.

Hi gendoc,

Right now, 3-day stage races and my family life don't mix. Just got back from my youngest's Little League game. I missed last week's game due to my riding (not purposely).

Hope you're having fun there. Good luck tomorrow.

Pretty much alone 'cause you were off the front, or off the back?

I'm doing SDSR. Just got home actually. I'm in the Vs, and was done hours ago, but stuck around to feed a couple friends in the 35+ race.

I'm not much of a sprinter, and there was no real break (though the field did split), so it came down to a bunch sprint with about 15 or 20 guys at the end.

Rolled through in 9th.

Got 2nd in the lap 4 KOM sprint, but I doubt it was good for much of anything, as I didn't get a top 3 in the lap 2 KOM sprint, and only got 5 KOM points in the time trial. I thought I might've had a chance at the win, or at least a podium today, if I could get in a break, so I played it a little conservative instead of going really hard for the KOM points.

In retrospect, the guy with the leaders jersey, had about 4 or 5 guys out there on his team. They were all fairly strong and pretty much much controlled the race, so my chances for a win, or even a podium were probably pretty slim.

I probably shoulda just buried myself on each of the KOM climbs and gone for the KOM jersey, with the exception of maybe one or two guys, it didn't look like anyone was really gunning for it, but those one or two guys probably had more points than me yesterday, so it might still not have been withing reach. I pretty much would have *had* to have got 1st in both KOM sprints to have any chance at it. Still probably had a better chance at that, than the race win.

Oh well, being an MTB crossover, I'm still pretty new at the road game. Lots to learn still.

Little apprehensive about tomorrow. My first ever crit. I just wanna get through it without crashing.

As for you guys doing Redlands, have at it. I *live* here, and have no interest in doing a Cat V crit on the Redlands course. Sketchy, sketchy. I'll probably be working registration though. I'm supposed to be down there at 11:00 to help out.
