The Nishiki is a pretty basic single speed trainer/gravel grinder budget build. Not high end but very nicely made 60cm 1978 Custom Sport frame set, high-ten tubing with hardened dropouts and lugs built by Kawamura. Built up with a Alex 700c SS/FG wheelset with 126 spacing and a nice Shimano 6206 170 triple crankset with a single center ring, which makes for nice chain line and tread line.Fairly neurtral 42/18 gearing good for about 90 percent of the places I ride. 90's era chromo aero bars and 130mm stem with Exchage aero levers with botton quick release paired to the stock dia-compe center pulls with modern pads, work great and allow enough clearance for large tires and fenders on rough roads. Vintage Sella Italia leather saddle, sr fluted seatpost and modern alloy platform pedals. The most note worthy thing about this bike is that it's a double tough large gravel grinder that weighs in at a fairly light 23lbs built almost entirely of salvaged or low cost parts.

I even rode about a quarter mile on gravel! I need to ride it on something more challenging than a flat paved rail trail before I can form a real opinion, but it definitely wants to go faster.

I see more nice pics here.
We took the tandem out for a quick spin before predicted rain. We got in 23 miles, put the bike in the car, started driving home and it started raining! Managed an average speed 13.9, way faster than our typical for various reasons.
Just two pics. You think a tandem is a long beast? Check out this monster, it's, ah, owners starting their return home as we were just starting out:

Riding around downtown Springfield, IL during the Susan G Komen 5k and Pridefest. Some streets were also closed for the annual art show, so it made for nice easy riding at some points.
Also hit hit up the farmers market this morning. 3 bottles of hot sauce fit in the saddle bag with all my regular stuff no problem.

I went out yesterday on a beautiful, calm morning, got to the northernmost point of my wide just in time for a 25 mph south wind to pick up for the return ride home. Still, never a bad ride. I even caught part of a local cricket match!

@northbend instigated an assault on Mckenzie Pass in the volcanic mountain range of Oregon yesterday. Weather forecast was iffy, he'd have to commit the day before and drive down from the outskirts of Seattle, and decided not to come. Portlandians @Andy_K, @aggiegrads (Steve), Steve's son Luke and myself met up at o'dark hundred for the 3 hour drive to Sisters, Oregon. Steve made it in 2 1/2.
McKenzie Pass is closed half the year, but cyclists are allowed to ride it starting sometime in the spring, depending on when snowplows can start their work.
After a good local breakfast we headed east on OR 242. It's a gentle climb at first, then tilts up just a bit so you think you're really climbing. In actuality, the climb from the Sisters side is pretty tame by PNW standards. coming from the west it can be pretty steep in a few sections. We decided on just the eastern side - many ride both in one day. Our ride was about 3000 feet of climbing, both climbs is over 7000, I believe.
The weather held up for us, and even though we all brought rain jackets for the long downhill back, they weren't needed.
Pics!
Extremely rare photo of Andy, awake before 7am. Bikes loaded in the team car.
Steve, Andy and Luke warming up before the real climbing starts
Luke has grown 3" since I last saw him on the North Trask ride. He's just in 8th grade, but is a heck of a rider already. Proud father Steve in front of his Gunnar

Summit in sight. The burnt brownies are from a 1500 year old lava flow.

Final pic from me, we road down the western side of the road until we came close to the big "cliff" dropoff, which would have required us ride up a 10-12% grade to get back to the car.

Adding a few pics to gugie's report on the McKenzie Pass ride...
There were a few dark clouds around most of the day, but we managed to avoid any rain.
Got a couple of glamour shots of the vintage bikes with Mt. Washington in the background.
This area was hit by forest fires last year, so it's even more unearthly than usual now.
Gotta keep some equipment on the road to justify having it closed to cars.
Dee Wright Observatory is very cool.
My phone wouldn't do a 360 degree panorama, but I think this is about 270.
Group shot by a snow bank
Proof that we were at the top

The sky was still threatening but it finally stopped raining long enough for me to take a quick ride to Inspiration Point along the Henry Hudson Parkway. Between travel and rain I’ve hardly ridden in the last 2 weeks.
First ride on the new Holdsworth retro 34-48 crankset. I have a sticky link for locate and loosen. Works well, looks great.

Yesterday I finally broke the 50 mile threshold for this year. Just an absolutely beautiful night -- calm winds and 70 degrees!
I saw 5 baby goats, 3 cats, 4 kittens, 3 ground squirrels, a couple hawks, and loads of blackbirds.

Made a trip into Mt Rainier NP at the Longmire entrance on Tuesday. Less than epic cycling because of snow closed roads, but great as a combo tourist and cyclist mini-vacation. I had never been on these roads before. Stayed the night at the Paradise Lodge.
Mt Rainier
Paradise Lodge, open year round, with limited winter activities. Avg snowfall at this 5400ft location = over 50 feet.
No cars on this stretch of road.
I need to add audio to let you appreciate the waterfalls along the sides of the roads. Sorry no audio.
Too many waterfalls to photograph
Reflection Lakes is still iced over. About 5200 ft elevation
Louise Lake Iced over except a fraction at the right edge that gets longer sun exposure

I took last Monday off work and toured the Mississippi River Trail (MRT) on my Raleigh Wyoming. We don't have mountains or canyons near my home, so my photos are rather humble compared to those that have been coming in from the West Coast lately. Nonetheless, here are some shots from a dreary afternoon south of Saint Paul:
I love this boat! It is so un-shipshape that it has a sort of river rat vibe to it. The name placard near the bow says "Dances With Carp".

On Wednesday, decided to retreat from the elevation a bit, after all this was supposed to be a cycling excursion. For anyone almost local, I highly recommend FS25 & FS23 from Randle. Empty paved roads, a bit rough in spots, but without potholes or serious damage. No expansive views (maybe later in the Spring when all roads ae fully open), but those iconic deserted forest roads. Saddle time was what I needed with some extended climbing.
FS25 heads south on the eastern side of Mt St Helens. FS23 goes east then south and runs closer to Mt Adams. I climbed until the road was closed and never saw either volcano. Mountain thunderstorms were moving in, I love the sound of extended thunder rolls, but did not want to get soaked. I have a history of not doing well when cold and wet on mountain roads; no one for aid should I goof-up.
I've heard of U-pick berry farms, but never U-fish - somehow sounds redundant.
Past Iron Creek, keep climbing!
Scenes along the way. Streams and boggy ponds and lower elevation fields. ...... I had a wonderful 2 days, in new places - just me & 2 bikes & nature's sounds = away from 'civilization?'.
