East coast to west coast ride
A friend and I plan to ride from somewhere near Washington DC to Florence Oregon starting in May. Are there any good routes east from Dulles or Ronald Reagan airport?

Directly outside of the Ronald Reagan Airport is the Mount Vernon Trail. If you follow it north, you can do one of the following:
Cross the bridge into Georgetown and find the start of the C&O Canal Towpath, which takes you pretty far west to Cumberland, MD but isn't fully paved.
Catch the Custis Trail as a shortcut to meet up with the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, which is fully paved and takes you through Leesburg.
