Good 'n Crusty Sale: Raleigh Competition & Peugeot PX-10
I'm digging deep in the crusty part of the fleet to offer up these two specimen frame sets for sale:
1973 Raleigh Competition
--Serial # A5750 under the BB
--Capella lugs
--Huret dropouts
--seat tube = 59cm center to top, top tube = 57cm center to center, chain stay = 45cm, wheelbase = 104cm, rear spacing = 120mm
--sale includes original headset, seat post (straight pin alloy 27.2mm), Brooks B.17 Champion Narrow saddle, brake cable stops front and rear, TA bottom bracket (118mm spindle), Huret cable guide, seat binder bolt.
--Frame condition is fairly weathered as shown though the black finish tends to hide some of that. Seatpost moves freely. Chrome is decent (cloudy in places but not rusted). Headbadge is cool.
--Price is $150 plus shipping in the CONUS from zip 02446.
[Pics in the next posting.]
1970s Peugeot PX-10
--Nervex Pro lugs
--Simplex dropouts
--seat tube = 58cm center to top, top tube = 57cm center to center, chain stay = 43cm, wheelbase = 101cm, rear spacing = 120mm
--Sale includes Campagnolo French-threaded headset in excellent condition (though the spacer is not Campy), Simplex seat post, original seat binder bolt.
--Frame condition is pretty beat as shown in the pics though threads are all sound, seat post moves freely. Missing its head badge.
--Price is $100 plus shipping in the CONUS from zip 02446.
SOLD!!

That raleigh competition is sweet. I've been wanting a reynolds 531 British bike for a while.
I just don't need any more projects . . . .

seconded. If it were an inch taller, I'd nab that Competition and keep two of them. Dunno about this 1930s geometry, or if it's some magic fairy dust they sprinkled, but something about the way it moves makes it the one to pick most days.
That's what I said before I bought mine. Just remember, '70s bike with '30s geometry, sweet ride, chameleon nature that can be adapted to all sorts of modes and gobs 'n gobs o' tire clearance ...

You’ll have to ask @no67el, who owns that one now.

from my experience with one of these capella-lugged beasts, that front fork is a bit like a Tardis - you can mount a tire that simply should never fit, then drop the fork onto the axle and still see generous daylight in there. It's as if they switched from flat to sloping crowns and never bothered to shorten the blades.
Rear maxes out around 37-38 between the chainstays.

Yes - and i *think* tubular 700 was OEM for these when built, but I will defer to folks who actually know...

If we ever decide to rebrand the bakery, I think we've got the name right here.

Well it's funny that this thread has come back to life--- and it's an embarrassing reminder that I still haven't completely built up this frame that I got from nlerner!
I did try fitting some different wheels/tires though, as I worked on build ideas. As people have said, the front forks has acres of space, so much that the reach down to 650b wheels looked pretty daunting. 700x38c seems the way to go! Though if anyone has experience building up these frames with 650b and can comment on the brake reach issue (maybe what brakes would actually make the gap!) I would be grateful.
It's a nice old frame-- I actually like the crustiness, and have done nothing other than clean and wax. The more I hang around old bikes, the more I like bike that "look their age" more than complete repaint/restore jobs....
Motivation! Gotta get this bike built for spring riding....
