Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

type of gravel differ based on geography?

Hi all,

I was recently researching some longer gravel rides here in the midwest and read some reports on the different types of gravel.

Basically, I read that in SE Minnesota for rides like the Almanzo 100, the gravel is very compact, fewer rocks, fewer flats, almost like concrete in certain areas. Then saw the Dirty Kanza in Kansas gravel was more rocky, sharp, less forgiving, a huge amount of flats.

Being new to gravel rides/races, how does the gravel differ here in the midwest or the US as a whole? Are the above summaries basically correct?

I'm hoping to break in some longer rides on more forgiving gravel which I'm seeing is SE Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Kansas and western Iowa seem little harsher.

Thanks for any input.

Benny

Depends on the local geology, road building practices, age of the road, how much the road is used and by what kind of vehicle at what speed, how long since last maintenance, weather, and I'm sure many other things.
