New in box Peugeot PA-10
Hi guys, bought this new in box Peugeot. Looking at some pictures, it should be a PA-10 from the seventies. The spec list is as follows:
Serial number: 1019363
Saddle: Idéale 80 type record
Pedals: Lyotard
Toe clips: Christophe
Toe clips straps: Lapize
Brakes: Mafac racer
Front and rear hub: Normandy
Rims: Record
Tubular tyres: Peugeot Route fabrication Canetti
Crankset: Stronglight
Quick release: Simplex
Front and rear derailleur: Simplex
Handlebars: AVA
Pump: AFA
Tubes: Tube Special Allège Peugeot
Dropouts: Simplex
Also in the box: Tressolux handlebar tape and Jantex tube tape, both somewhat disintegrated and no longer usable.
At the top of the seat tube '73' is stamped. Does that refer to the production year? 73 also returns on the box label.
Now, i've put this bike together. Took it out for a test drive (25 kms) in the sun, and returning home, i noticed one major issue with the bike: on one side of the frame some salmon-colored discoloration took place. Did it get 'sunburnt'? Am I doomed to keep it out of the sun forever?
(apparently, i'm not allowed to post pictures as newbie)

Hi,
Welcome aboard! There's a 10 post-limit before you can post pics. But just keep on commenting and you'll get to that in no time :-)
Where are you from btw? And what size is the bike?
Good luck with your new old bike!
Cheers,
Jan

The "73" on the seat lug is the angle of the lug socket. For pictures, you may want to park your photos at a photo site which would allow one of us to grab the photos and post them for you before you reach your 10 post limit.

You can ride that bike in the sun. Frames sometimes do get discolored from age but the Peugeot paint is pretty tough and pretty good so I wouldn't worry about it.
That's a cool bike, I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures.
I have a 70s era Libertas I need to rebuild soon!

That's the blackest Delrin I've ever seen Wonder if it's brittle yet?
And yea, it definitely looks to be a 54 in size. Still, cool and looks amazing. I agree with the PA-10 assessment - forged dropouts vs. stamped but no Reynolds tubing.
Shave 2-3lbs or more off if you drop a non-cottered Stronglight alloy crank on there.

I am sure a few of us would like to hear a little more than found new in the box.
Best, Ben

I got it from a guy who's girlfriends father used to have a Peugeot dealership in Belgium. When the shop closed down, they were left with a number of unsold bikes. They have been sitting in the guy's attick for years now; he already sold all the orange-colored ones and this was the last remaining white-colored ...

Very cool, @peter_f
Part of me would love to ride the hell out of it. The other part of me would want to leave it in the package. I think the ride-it side of me would win. but that's an amazing find. I love the orange ones a lot.
It would be really cool to find one of the Reynolds-framed bikes in the same condition.

At least it's not one of the damn-near-5lb'er Nervar steel cranks and spindle.
Edit, I actually looked this up. Per Velobase, just the arms on that crankset weigh nearly 26oz (just noticed this isn't quite the exact one, but the one pictured above doesn't quite look like a Comp 55): https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=86d69956-97bb-4a89-90fe-6360ea342102&Enum=115
Entire Stronglight 49D assmelbed is just a touch over 20oz https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=201ac3da-4c28-4b72-903e-623584e07d7b&Enum=115
I'm going to guess the two steel chainrings and hardware with the required cotters are going to push the steel to nearly a pound heavier. If that had a solid (non-hollow) steel spindle and you were upgrading to a hollow non-cottered spindle you could reach the 24oz reduction range pretty easily.

Decades ago, I almost bought one of these in 1971, earlier graphics. As I thought about it I realized I would want to exchange the cranks, pedals, derailleurs... The rear was going to be a problem as it was Simplex specific...and this was before the LJ series units, I waited and kept saving for a higher spec bike. Overall, a Handsome bike. This one is a time capsule.

Early 70's Peugeot PA-10
The PA-10 was Peugeot's amateur racing model. Gitane had the Interclub and other French makers had similar models.
They were mostly made of lighter gauge carbon steel tubing with sewups and racing geometry. Those bikes were generally under 25 Lbs with steel components. They could be reduced to ~23- 23 1/2 Lbs with some lighter parts.
The lugs are Bocama style No 14, Pattern II. Peugeot used them on several lower mid range models like the PA-10 for a few years in the early 70's.
Should have a sporty ride.
Enjoy,
