That's the Criterium right?

We have a weird mix of new flowers and old leaves still because of the soft winter and weather that alternates between warmer and cold.

Ishiwata 022, which I really like. 61cm ctc seat tube with short toptube (56.5). Needed a long stem.

edit: are short TTs on large Dutch bikes a ‘thing’???

Ah, the Competion. I thought it was a different model.

I'm not sure about the top tubes on all Dutch bikes but it certainly does seem to be the case on Batavus bikes from that era. @non-fixie might be able to give you a better answer because he has a bigger sample size.

I've been meaning to measure the rest of my bikes to compare them like this:

Link: Batavus Randonneur GL geometry - BicycleCalculator.co.uk.

Key Metrics
  • Trail 34mm
  • Wheel Flop Factor 8.9mm
  • Head tube Angle 74°
  • Seat Tube Angle 72.8°
  • Virtual fork angle 8.966°
  • Bottom Bracket Drop 70mm
  • Bottom Bracket Height 265mm
  • Wheelbase 1030mm
  • Seat Tube Length c-t 640mm
  • Effective top tube 565mm
  • Reach 373mm
  • Stack 616mm
  • Seat Middle - Bottom Bracket 238mm
  • Fork Length 385mm

Though I am not entirely sure if these measurements are correct anymore. I believe I remeasured a while ago and came to slightly higher trail.

Interesting question. I've never considered short TT's to be a Dutch quality, but then again I've never given it much thought either. I've always assumed it to be more of an "era thing". Up until the late seventies a "fistful of seat post" was considered correct (which equals 11cm, according to one publication ). After that top tubes became longer, or probably more correct: frames became less tall.

I haven't measured all my top tubes, but I'm pretty sure the one with the biggest ST to TT ratio is actually Japanese. A 63 x 56 cm Miki-built frame. It was originally built for a Dutch brand (Union), though. Originally sold as a true racer, its measurements (short wheelbase, French fit) make it well-suited for my credit card touring needs:

Got inspired by a recent post here at the BF's to sort out my old Jeunet 620 rat tourer and take it for a ride. Still a lot of snow here in the Mid Rockies likely the lesser passes won't be clear till late May or June so local rides it is.

I rode my commute today for the first time since snow started falling a month or two or three or four or five or six ago. Okay, so maybe it wasn't really six months, it just seems like it. I rode the '83 Peugeot PFN10. Okay, it started life as a PFN10, but since the N signified clincher tires and I'm running sew-ups it has reverted to being a PF10, and a fine bike it is indeed.

I stopped briefly on the return home to help out a guy fixing a flat. It turns out he had everything under control, but the stop was worth the time because he was riding a 25 y.o. KHS so we talked old bikes for a few minutes.

Which reminds me, I wanted to ask a question. @non-fixie, how does one pronounce Gazelle in Dutch? guh-ZELL-uh would seem correct if it is at all like German. And the next question is what the plural would be, Gazellen? I have to ask now that I have two of them.

Here you go:

How to pronounce Gazelle somewhat unenthusiastically

I'm sure you can improve on that.

The plural would be a herd, of either "Gazellen" of "Gazelles". Both are correct. And if they're small, they would be "Gazelletjes".

"Where'd You Ride Last Saturday?"

Looking forward to low 60s tomorrow, partly cloudy. Might be time to wrest the shorts from hibernation.

Managed rides the past two days, Tuesday and Wednesday were given to the gods of AFIB. Apparently I can add doxycycline antibiotic to the growing list of Rx that kick the neural-electrical pathways of my atria into random firing order. Its gets painful when it keeps up for a while, more than I want to deal with right now. The past two days were absolutely perfect weather wise and the riding felt great after missing so many weeks.

Did a really cool 16 mile ride (8 miles out 'n back) out to my LBS here in town. I had to extremely careful along Gayton Rd, Lauderdale, and especially Broad St. as traffic is whipping by at 45-50 mph, talking on cellphones, texting, Lord knows what... Cars will run you right off the road -or worse- turn you into a grease spot very quickly!

8 mile ride to my LBS: 32:45
Stopped in, chatted with them briefly, refilled my water bottle, etc...
8 mile ride back home: 35:30 (headwind the whole way).
Total time for 16 miles: 1 hr, 8 min.

My C&V '85 Fuji in front of the LBS.

A hilarious decal that I created in MS Word and taped it to the downtube by the Suntour shifters:

I live on the corner of a block which hardly harbors a blade of grass. But within very short walking distance is the UO campus. Though walk there, I did not. I rode, and I rode around it. Meandered aimlessly. Stopped only to admire a gorgeous magnolia. There are miles of intersecting througways here, and a Saturday evening is a pleasant way to have them almost all to your self on two wheels. And a perfect way to wake up from a lazy afternoon’s nap.

Headwinds from every direction today, but it was warm.

I'd guess around 30 miles after a lazy morning. Then we met a couple friends at a newish margarita & pizza place in town for dinner at 5pm -- just my style.

Our local state park opened up its singletrack for mountain biking yesterday.

So I did the reasonable thing and took an 80's tourer converted to 40x20 single speed and ripped a few miles of rooty, sandy fun

This was my first time riding a singlespeed bike off-road, and to be honest it wasn't as brutal as I thought it would be. It was interesting to notice how my riding is different than on my 1x10 hardtail 29er mountain bike with 120mm of squish on the front. I had to take much more careful lines, but I think I took some features a little more aggressively than I thought I would so that I could conserve my momentum.

The 1986 Passage behaved itself wonderfully, the long wheelbase and slack angles meant that it took the rough downhills with much more stability than I expected.

I got the old Legnano out on a pre-Eroica 44 mile beach run today, from Ventura to Summerland, just south of Santa Barbara. I had just rebuilt the bottom bracket and headset, after 55 years! All was good. According to Strava, I even set a personal best on Bates Road climb, on old steel, even compared to my "better" geared carbon rides. Amazing, 7% hill, 42/28 best gear. Great day on the bike. We even saw 3 whales, just past the surf line. Looking towards Eroica, even with the antique pedals they require.
