I guess I could look at it as having started this summer with $1000 in C&V money, and right now I have an 82|83 Tommasini Racing, an almost mint/original 1980 Univega Gran Premio, a 1988 Panasonic DX-5000, and enough money to either pick up the Trek 720 I saw this morning or wait till I find another must-have bike for under $300.

If I'd have spent that entire roll on a single amazing, pristine grail bike, I'd be afraid to wrench on it myself, and I'd be afraid to ride it hard. More importantly, I'm learning what I really like and need and want, since prior to this year the only steel road bikes I road were absolute entry-level bike boom stuff. In other words, I wouldn't begin to be able to appreciate that $1000 C&V bike.

What strikes me is how much quality one can get in C&V bikes for small $$, if you're patient and lucky (and have the combined resources of the wonderful experts here).

That said, give me a little more time riding and getting to know the bikes I have, and I'm sure I'll start to have an actual informed opinion about what other bike is worth $1000 to me. Just based on reading others' opinions, I'd have to guess a 3Rensho or a Merckx or a DeRosa. But that's just repeating what I've read.

I am guessing your CSI has a carbon fork then. I have been riding an Atlanta for 3 years and it gets most of the saddle time between 5 bikes. It is awfully nice. I look for a CSI in my size all the time so if you say it's "ALL THAT" then I need to look harder.

BTW I had 2 Atlantas at one time, the other one had a carbon fork and I MUCH prefer the one with a steel fork. The carbon fork frame went away.

I'm all set for bikes, but I think I'd upgrade the drivetrains of my Trek 5500 and my Lemond Zurich - in fact, I plan to anyways. My Lemond is going to go from 8x2 Shimano Tricolor to a hybrid 9x3 drivetrain just like the PDG Series 7 Paramount I have. Once I do that, I may sell the Paramount, because I strongly prefer the Lemond 853 frame to the PDG Series 7 Tange OS frame in terms of comfort. The PDG Series 7 is fast, but the harshest riding steel frame I own - but the drivetrain is great, which is why I'm going to replicate it on my Lemond Zurich.

My Trek 5500 just shifts roughly, and needs a gearing overhaul

Yeah, my white CSI has a F1 fork with some issues.

I bet Dave Anderson could come up with a nifty replacement.

The CSI frame is a keeper though.

Asking and selling...

$1000 gets you a nice bike, and even REALLY nice if patient and open to brands, but some of the more...exotic...stuff can smash that barrier pretty easily.

if I had 1K, that for whatever reason, I could ONLY spend on a bicycle: I'd hunt down a Holdsworth Professional and see if a 1k would let her loose. I have pretty much all the bikes I wanted... Look 753, Zunow z1, centurion IM... last on the list is a holdsworth professional.
