Anyone Cutting Weight This Spring?

I sure am. Winter was crazy up here (in fact, still is) and coupled with too much eating in slow metabolism season...I now have 15lbs to lose. Twenty would be peachy. Weather has been crappy and struggling to get 2 rides a week was the reality. Time to change it.

Someone posted a weight-loss article for cyclists showing calculated improvements based on each 5lbs lost. Having been here before, this is my motivation. Here we go.

I lost 30 lb.

December 14 I was 199 lb. Now I am 169 lb.

The difference on the bike is amazing.

I'm an ex-college football player and struggle with weight on this mesomorphic body. I decided to cut way back on alcohol and calories generally. In the past 4--5 weeks I've lost 4 lbs. This Spring I should start the season about 7 lbs lighter than usual. GCN did a video about the effect of weight loss on climbing. I think they used a back pack with 10 kg in it. I'll try to find it.

I wish I had it to share. The article was posted by a road cycling page on Facebook. They were showing 5lb increments on a hillclimb up to 15 or 20lbs if I recall.

This is what I cant wait for in the spring, that first ride in summer riding gear and road bike. Granted we may not see 60f in April up here, maybe I can shed 8-10lbs before that first outing as such.

I have no idea. I’m on a program called Whole30 and have sugar free for six days and I hate life, but maybe 25 days from now I’ll feel better about it.

Trying to.

I've been more than 3 weeks off the bike and I'm surprised my weight is holding steady. I think what fat I am gaining is being offset by less muscle mass. lol

An occasional poster on this forum added a chart to a reply that I wrote elsewhere which speaks for itself. It's consistent with my experience, but I don't do many 9-10% climbs, so can only speak for the 2% to 6% stuff.

Too many pasties, eh. I love'm though, also have lbs to lose.

As of yesterday, I think there's still two feet of snow in the Porkies! Yikes!

We are looking at 2-3’ by the end of the Fri-Mon major storm. We will probably have power outtages from ice and 35-40mi winds. It’s going to be a rough one. Pasties? More like pastries.

I'm looking to put weight on. Had a stay in hospital and a neck/spine op last week, losing 8lbs from my normal 150lbs.

I won't be able to ride for 2/3 month and will put it back on, so won't have the opportunity to see if my climbing improves with weight loss.

I agree with this in principal, that the largest benefit of weight loss is seen when climbing. This is true initially but one thing overlooked is the longer term impact of weight loss on training.

One is able to train better and adapt to the stresses of training faster without all the extra weight. Recovery time is shortened as well. The result is that given time and smart training, one can see significant and even similar improvement when riding on flat courses.

It just takes a while for performance on the flats to catch up, that's my point. Don't be discouraged because you don't see instantaneous increases in average speed. It will happen. Just be patient and keep training. Consistency is key. The benefits will come.

One day you will be grinning ear to ear, powering along at 22 MPH on a road where you used to do 16 MPH. Going to bed hungry all those nights will have been so worth it.

I had my biggest weight loss in the winter of 2015-2016. I went from 208 in Oct of 2015 to 181 in May of 2016. I have since been riding the weight roller coaster, bouncing back and forth between 183 and 196. I reached my lowest weight since just after graduating from high school (in 1983) at 177 in September of 2017, but it was short lived.

It seemed to be easier to keep off when I bought a bike and started riding one to two times per week, in addition to my inline skate training and spin classes.

Just saw that forecast. It was 74F here today with a nosedive in our future as well, but not as bad as you're in for, just rain.

Edit: they just issued a winter storm watch or warning for Sanalac County thru noon Sunday.

I've lost 30 pounds since February 20. I did Round 1 of Whole 30, and had no exercise in that period (weather here was cold, rainy, generally crummy). I took an 11 day break, and am now on Round 2. I haven't lost anymore yet, but just started riding this week. I didn't gain any weight back, though. I sorted through some clothes tonight and found some I've "undergrown" and will take to charity tomorrow. I also have a couple shirts I've been hanging onto but was unable to wear comfortably. They fit now. I want to drop another 30 this summer and should be able to with steady riding and my new eating habits. I have a 50th high school class reunion in October, so that's my weight loss goal line.
