Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm curious why you limit the 105 components to STI, FD, RD. I think the best part of the 105 groupset is the cranks. Stiff and light.

It is not so much limiting, as it is hard to find a full group set; crank, cassette, shifters, derailleurs, and breaks. Ultimately I'd like a complete group set.

Not my favorite since I haven't ridden one, but Nashbar has an Ultegra equipped alloy bike for less than $1000 right now on sale.
Cavalo Corsa Ultegra Road Bike
If you ride it fast enough people may think the downtube says Cervelo...

Here here!

Amongst other things you'll get the full 105 groupset and have enough money to buy decent wheels. Too many bikes (even those above $1000) come with bottom of the barrel wheelsets costing $100-$150 when decent ones are just $150 more.

Since the 105 groupset cost $350, Decent wheels $300 and sundaries another $150 you've got close to $700 to spend on the frameset.

There are many options:

CF: Chinese CF Frame $599 (Road Carbon Fiber framesets - NEW Motobecane Le Champion Carbon)
Steel: Venturi Breezer Frame $299 2012 Breezer Venturi Frameset Blue/White | Bikewagon
Alu: CAAD10 Frameset CANNONDALE CAAD10 FRAME 2015 :: £399.99 :: Frames :: Road Racing :: Pauls Cycles

Just about the best chuckle I've had today. Ride fast and turn it into a Cervelo

This bike and a few others on this thread are the old 5700 10 speed and some are revamped 5800 11 speed. So the OP should be careful to compare apples to apples.

Good luck!

Jamis Icon is my vote. Really nice frames in person and the component mix can't be beat at this price.

I think it can. A Ridley from Performance may be missing the brakes and crank but he can replace those and still be cheaper than the Jamis.

The Sportif is an endurance bike, so it won't be as aggressive as road bikes with a more racing geometry.

I've got a 2014 Sportif w/ Tiagra, and it's a good bike.

I recommend to anyone that asks that they include it in the list of endurance bikes that they road test. As each brand's bikes have a little different geometry, it is best to road test several different brands to find the one that fits you the best. As long as it fits you as well as other brands, it is a good deal.

Looks like the diamondback site doesn't let you buy direct, they just show some retailers where you can find the bike. MSRP on the diamondback site is $2,300.

I took one for a test ride with 105 and it was pretty sluggish accelerating but once it got going it felt smooth. The cornering is good. When I went back and weighed it, it was 21 lbs. +1 for Fuji roubaix, it corners fast, accelerated fast, rides smooth and weighs 18 lbs!

I know BD is usually in the minority around here, but this is damn near full Ultegra and carbon:
Save Up To 60% Off Shimano Ultegra 6800 11 Speed Road Bikes | Carbon Fiber | Roadbikes - 2014 Motobecane Immortal Ice

Or add another $200 and jump up a few degrees:
Save Up To 60% Off Ultegra 22 Speed Road Bikes- Motobecane Le Champion CF LTD Aero Carbon Road Bikes

I had the Le Champion a couple years ago as my first foray into road bikes and absolutely love it. As long as you can do a bit of wrenching yourself and can dial in your fit without being able to try it first, it's a no brainer.
