Please suggest a $40-80 helmet, Large

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Please suggest a $40-80 helmet, Large

Hello all,

Really I'm not the type that hunts and scours the net for bargains, but I do like a good bargain! With that in mind, has anyone recently found a good road helmet? I really do want to get a new legit helmet this time. I'd like to get some good use out of it too. I guess the one pet peeve I got with helmets is that the sweat pads really disintegrate pretty f-ing fast! So if I could also be able to get replacements for those pads, that would be sweet!

Thanks for any and all help provided and it's much appreciated.

I have a Giro Foray. It's light enough, vents well and I like the design because it isn't real pointy in the rear like a lot of helmets. I always thought that looks stupid. Some of the '15 colors are on clearance for @ $40.

They have a Performance bike in Long Beach. That way you can try them on. Here is a link to everything they have between $20-$90.

I have a Giro Savant that's A-OK, fits my head. Paid $35 for it in a LBS sale. With helmets I find that half of them don't fit me though, so bargain hunting is only half the job. One of the things I would never buy online!

Just bought this Limar 777 from Competitive Cyclist in size Large. Currently $30. So far very comfortable and the pads are removable for easy cleaning. IMO at least as good as my previous helmet, the Cannondale Teramo, which I paid more than twice as much at a LBS a few years ago.

At that price point, I would just go for what is on sale:

Great helmet. I started off with one then upgraded to Propero II, crashed it and replaced it with the S3. All are good helmets, great ventilation but even better as you move up. The Propero II is probably the best value at about $110 though. It's just a few grams heavier than the $200 Prevail and looks identical.

I bought my wife and son the Limar 675 mountain helmets at just $21 and they both like them. The Limar 675 is an upgrade for my son, who used to wear a Giant helmet, and my wife, who used to wear a Bell Solar. The Limar has more vents, a better retention system, and looks better than than either of those other helmets. So the other helmets all go into the backup box.

It is hit and miss. I have an Ascent helmet I bought a number of years ago online that fits like a bucket on my head. I only use that helmet for cold weather rides when wearing a hat under my helmet. I took a chance on the Limar, but I must say I am happy with my purchase so far.

Giro Bishop is good for my fat head. $45-ish I think.

I second the Giro Bishop recommendation. It fits my large round oval head perfectly (UXL). Paid 49 at the local bike shop.

I just got the Giro Savant MIPS on sale for $90 at a LBS. I second "trying them on" because different companies fit just slightly different. Giro helmets fit my head so well, a fact I never knew until I put one on. I'd also second the Foray. I was in between the two but ended up going to the Savant MIPS because it was on sale. Regular price is $110'ish, but non-MIPS Savant is sub $90. Cheers.

Seriously, just go to a local bike store and try on helmets that meet your price range. There really are two different kinds of heads - you got the Giro/Specialized head, and then the Bell/Kask/Rudy etc. head. If it doesn't fit, the price is irrelevant.

I was just an Incycle on Sunday buying new helmets for the entire family and got a Specialized Echelon for my son for $39. You can usually find last year's model or a less-than-popular team for a lower price (cough Astana cough)

I spent way more than your budget on my hemlet and got one with MIPS - so the interesting thing for YOU is that the MIPS version only really have one little pad against the forehead. A lot less to disintegrate!

Interesting.. usually in helmet threads, lots of folks bring up how you should get a MIPS helmet. So, here goes, perhaps take at look at the Bell Draft

+2 on the Echelon, I wanted to spend much more on a helmet just because I could at the time of purchase but the Echelon just fit me better than anything else I tried in three different stores. I did use some acetone to remove the Specialized logo off of the back because I just couldn't have that displayed while riding my Cannondale!

Holly cow! I thought no one responded to my post as I got NO NOTICES! Then I come here and there's 18 responses!

I think I'm just going to assume there's responses and not even worry about notices.

Thanks guys on the help here. What seems to be the overall view is for me to go to my LBS and start trying stuff out. That's not a bad idea! I do still have my go to helmet. So it's not like I'm protection-less. I do want to spend extra money if I find something I really like. The MIPS designs look really good and will definitely look into those. I think what I'll do when I get my helmet is to look for the replacement pads asap and just keep them at my work area till needed.

Thanks again!

If you have amazon prime it works out really well. Usually better prices and free returns. The lady has this one that we got for 65/70 bucks in white. She loves it and I thought it was a great buy for around 75 bucks. I purchased a Bell Volt a year ago that was marked down as well through Amazon.
