Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A question for Speedplay users

Is it possible to unclip by twisting your heel inwards as I can with Shimano pedals? I've been looking and cannot find the answer elsewhere.

thanks.

A lot depends on the model of Speedplay. I use Speedplay X pedals and they have a LOT of float. I haven't tried it, but it might be possible as long as the chain stay, seat tube, or down tube aren't in the way.

Some other Speedplay pedals have adjustable float. You might be able to do it with them, but I'm not certain.

I use the Ultra-lights and can't unclip inwards due to the limited space. I think if I had more room I maybe could.

EDIT - I was just playing with the angles and deliberately had my foot in an awkward position, and don't think you can unclip inwards.

With X Series, yes.

As others have stated, frame or crank arms might be in the way.

At the top of the pedal stroke however, I can unclip both ways - inward and outward. I rarely do this on my road bike but have had speedplay on my fixed-gear bike and it is sometimes a necessity.

I have Light Action (predecesor to the Ultra-Lights) and its possible to unclip by twisting your hell inward. Just be careful you don't hit the spokes or get your heel caught in the rear wheel.

thanks for the answers guys. The foot I unclip when stopping at lights etc has a fair bit of toe out so I've just gotten into the habit of clipping out by twisting the heel in as its easier.

You can theoretically. The cleats allow it. When I used speedplay for over a decade I would frequently unclip with a twist and a roll of the ankle at the same time.

Makes sense. When I read your OP my first thought was 'why would he want to unclip inboard'. But hey, do what works. Changing your routine may result to that stop light fall

Light Action have an adjustor in the cleat that lets you rotate the release points are for unclipping a fair amount. I keep mine set for the least heel out motion I can to clip out (can't do heel in anyway with my main bike and my size 13 shoes). With mine set all the way in I would probably need to bump my heels together to unclip.
