This sounds about right, especially among the throngs of hipsters that have invaded Gotham.

As for walking vs riding, I'd much rather ride for anything over a half a mile. Walking is boring and tedious. I'd much rather run/jog than walk any sort of distance, although jogging on pavement is pretty hard on the legs/joints.

It's roughly 3 miles riding in my suit to get to/from trade shows. Faster than walking, cabs, buses, etc
I wouldn't recommend making the return trip like that or on foot at night.

Never had an issue, but I'm never out 'late' either. Any place can be dangerous late at night, even Fargo, ND.

True. I used to work a few blocks north of McCormick Place years ago and didn't feel much safer when I was back there about 5 years ago.

Excellent article, picking up some of the counter-points in this thread and bringing the data to support it.

More people working from home but using a bike for everything else. I forgot about that. And they are on the rise and don't get counted.

Right! That's my story. I barely use my car*, I bike or walk nearly everywhere, but since I moved to a home office three years ago, no more bike commutes (I miss the bike-communing routine)

* I only keep this car 'cause it's paid for, cost very little to maintain/insure, and I have off-street parking
