Classic Peugeot Cycle, Need Help Assessing Model Details!

Hello Everyone!

Long story short, my grandfather passed away a few years ago. One of the few things he had left me was an old Record Du Monde Peugeot cycle. I had never got into cycling. However with how my grandfather was, I knew it had to be a great bike. So my intention was to restore/clean the bike and get into riding. However that has not been able to happen and doesn't look like it is going to happen anytime soon. So i came across this forum and noticed there were quite a few Peugeot enthusiasts. If anyone could lend some assistance into helping find out the what and when and assessing the value and potential work needed to go into restoring it? Thank you in advance! I have a few pictures but unfortunately cannot post them at this time as I found out I must make 10 posts first.

Maybe you can do me a favor. I am almost certain I didn't have 10 posts before I posted a picture before but that was a couple of years ago and my memory fails me.

If you have a computer, when you hit the reply button, there is a button labelled "Manage Attachments" at the lower left. Also an icon with a little mountain next to the smiley face in the bar under the "Message" label (after Title).

Either will bring up an Upload Files window. Drag and drop your pictures and hit the "Upload" button in the upper right.

If you don't have a computer, let me know.

If you do and it just doesn't work that way, let me know too so I don't bother trying to tell newbies to try it.

Appreciate it.

Thanks

If you go to introductions, introduce yourself, and reply to a few posts, you'll hit 10 pretty fast. Yes we like old Peugeots and can help you get the bike back into riding shape.

Welcome to the forums. Assuming you are the USA, the subject bicycle is an early 1970s Peugeot UE8, which was an upper entry level, light touring model.

Pick assist and +1 on the bike boom Peugeot Site although T-Mar has done a model ID. Lots of info here and on the Sheldon Brown site and RJ the bike guy on Youtube, to help you go through the bike and replace the consumables: tires chain bar wrap brake pads cables and housing etc. The first step though is does it fit you? do you like it. If its not too far gone (cracked tires etc) and you can safely shift and stop do some short rides close to home and see how you like it. Its easy to get into a project, spend time, effort and money and then find the bike doesn't actually work for you. Ask me how I know , so if you an determine if it fits and you like it First that is the way to go.

I have one of these as well. It's a great bike; this is mine. I still need to finish fixing it up!

Your bike is in great shape. I am guessing your grandfather knew how to take good care of things. I love that water bottle cage! If you tell me the lights still work I will be super impressed with your grandfather; well, actually, I already am. I have one that is almost identical but perhaps a year or two older than your's.

UO-8s were very common in the U.S., but UE-8s were considerably rarer. Very nice! These basic Peugeots ride much better than most bikes of the same general price range and vintage.

This is a good resource for looking at model year ranges, in terms of decal and head badge decals. Yours does appear to be consistent with the 1971-1974 models shown there.
